Dorchester Chamber of Commerce collects responses from city of Cambridge and Board of Education Election Candidates |
2024 is a General Election year with the vote completing locally at 8 pm on November 5th. However, the 2024 City of Cambridge Election is not on the same schedule as the General Election. Voting for the Mayor and all five City Commissioners will happen on Saturday, October 19, 2024 from 7 a.m through 7 p.m. Voting for the City Election will be held at 447 Race Street, Cambridge, MD. You can visit the Chamber website (https://www.dorchesterchamber.org/) for more information on both the General Election and the City of Cambridge Election.
The Dorchester Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee created a series of questions/topics for each of the local offices up for election in 2024. The questions are based on topics the committee believes are of concern to our members. It is by no means meant to be a comprehensive list of all voter concerns but will provide insight on candidate positions on key issues that would have an impact on our community. The questions were provided to all candidates, even those running unopposed, to give all an equal chance to present their positions. The Chamber believes a well-informed public has a better chance of electing the most qualified candidates.
Thirteen of the fourteen candidates running in the City of Cambridge election provided responses. One of the four candidates on the ballot for Board of Education provided responses, two of the four are running unopposed. The responses can be viewed and downloaded from the Chamber website: https://www.dorchesterchamber.org/candidate-questions.

Portion of Route 662 To Temporarily Close for Regional Medical Center Construction |
EASTON, Md. (September 13, 2024) – A section of Maryland Route 662 is scheduled to temporarily close on or around October 1, 2024, to facilitate construction work related to the new University of Maryland Shore Regional Medical Center, according to University of Maryland Shore Regional Health (UM SRH) officials. Vehicle traffic will be detoured to State Route 50 (Ocean Gateway); the closure will extend from Airport Road on the south end to Hiners Lane on the north end, and is expected to last approximately seven months, with anticipated reopening prior to the start of the 2025 summer travel season.
“While we regret possible inconvenience this may cause to motorists, we want to assure the community that detailed contingency and emergency management plans are in place,” said Ken Kozel, CEO and President, UM SRH. “We have been working collaboratively with the State Highway Administration as well as Talbot County and Easton roads and emergency management officials to plan for safe and efficient management of a wide range of emergency scenarios.”

The Arc Central Chesapeake Region Wins Three National Awards for Innovative Employee Benefits |
The Arc Central Chesapeake Region (The Arc) is honored to have been recognized with three “Rosie” awards from Health Rosetta for outstanding employee health benefits this year: America’s Top Health Plans, Top Health Plans of the East, and the Walk the Talk Award.
The awards recognize organizations that lead in transforming employee healthcare benefits through innovative, cost-effective solutions. The Arc was selected from a competitive pool of 196 finalists and over 2,000 initial candidates nominated by benefits advisors, solution providers, and clinical professionals.
“Winning not just one but three Rosetta Awards in a single year shows how competitive and impactful our total rewards are at a national scale,” said Jonathon Rondeau, President & CEO. “We have been very intentional about improving our total rewards because we believe that taking care of our employees goes beyond offering a paycheck. By ensuring they have access to affordable, high-quality and affordable healthcare, we’re investing in our employees’ long-term well-being. It’s humbling to receive this recognition, but it’s also a reminder that there’s always more we can do.”

Emily's Produce: BEST FAMILY BUSINESS & BEST FARM STAND — Dorchester/Talbot Counties | |
Perhaps the most well-known “Emily” on the Eastern Shore, Emily’s Produce is synonymous with honest, hardworking family values, exceptional products and superior customer service.
Founded in 1999 in Cambridge, MD, Emily’s Produce started as a roadside fruit and vegetable tent by Paul and Kelly Jackson, who named the business after their firstborn child. This year, they’re celebrating the company’s 25th anniversary on the same land farmed by seven family generations before them. Today, Emily’s Produce has grown into a destination for food, family fun and community that features U-Pick experiences, on-farm kitchen creations, a catering operation and more.
“We’re all about the fresh, natural bounty of the Eastern Shore,” says Kelly. “That means we’ve always got fruits and vegetables picked fresh that go straight from our family’s fields to your family’s table.”
Emily and her brother Kyle have grown along with the operation, as well, taking on valuable roles that support the family business—and one another. They’ve each cultivated a passion for working in the family business and have studied collegiately to learn how to propel it forward. Emily graduated from Delaware Valley University with an Agri-Business degree and Kyle currently attends the University of Maryland, pursuing a degree through its Agriculture program.

Dorchester County Council picks Tim Crosby for CWDI Board |
CAMBRIDGE — The Dorchester County Council has voted to appoint architect and planner Tim Crosby to the open county-appointed seat on the Cambridge Waterfront Development Inc. Board of Directors.
The unanimous vote comes more than a year after Jeff Powell, who previously held the seat, resigned from the board. In an interview with the Star Democrat, Dorchester County Council President Lenny Pfeffer said Powell resigned from the CWDI board over a year ago when he took on the role of interim county manager.
At a Dorchester County Council meeting on Sept. 17, Pfeffer said the county had received an application from Crosby, who is an architect and planner with a firm based in Cambridge.

New Artwork at Harriet Tubman Museum Highlights Little-Known Heroes of the Underground Railroad |
CAMBRIDGE, MD - A new exhibit at the Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center in Cambridge tells the compelling story of two individuals who played pivotal roles in freeing slaves on Maryland’s Eastern Shore during the 1850s.
The exhibit features two ceramic artworks, known as diptychs, donated by artist Mike Pugh. These pieces memorialize the story of Harriet Tillison, a free Black woman from Chestertown, Kent County, who took on the responsibility of freeing slaves, according to Linda Harris, the museum’s director of events.
"Harriet Tillison was a free Black woman living on the Eastern Shore in Chestertown, Kent County, and she had taken on the responsibility to free slaves," Harris said.
Tillison’s efforts were in partnership with James Bowers, a white Quaker. While the exact moment of their meeting in Kent County remains unclear, Harris noted that such partnerships were not uncommon during the time, as individuals worked together to aid the enslaved.
