Legal Well Being

The New Mexico Lawyer Assistance Program (NM LAP)

You don’t have to earn rest!

In a profession that rewards long hours, it’s easy to believe rest must be earned or is for the weak.

Rest often sounds simple and not important. Many of us struggle to truly take a breather, rest, and recover. We can sit down to relax, but the thoughts keep racing, bodies stay tense, and we can allow work to pull us back in. In a culture that rewards constant productivity, rest can feel uncomfortable or even guilt-inducing. Stress keeps the nervous system in a constant state of “on,” making it hard to settle even when the work stops. For many, staying busy becomes a way to maintain control or avoid emotions. Rest is vital for the long game!

It is essential for mental clarity, emotional regulation, and sustainable success.

Life isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon.
