July is recognized as a month of rejuvenation and renewal — making it the perfect time for legal professionals to reassess their work-life balance. Studies show that attorneys and legal staff who intentionally schedule downtime during summer months report lower rates of burnout and improved cognitive performance.

Consider taking a brief mid-year inventory of your mental health, workload and personal goals. Small adjustments now can lead to significant improvements in your well-being throughout the rest of the year.

June: The Importance of Peer Support and Coaching

One of the most valuable resources available to any legal professional is the support of peers and coaches. The pressures of the legal world can be isolating, but having a trusted colleague or peer mentor coach to turn to can make all the difference. Peer support provides a sense of community and understanding, offering reassurance that you’re not alone in facing common challenges. A mentor can offer guidance, career advice, and personal support, helping you navigate both professional and emotional obstacles. If you don’t already have a mentor coach, check out SBNM’s coaching resources website at https://www.sbnm.org/Member-Services/Professional-Development-Program/Certified-Professional-Coaching.

Professional Development Program (PDP)

In addition to other resources, the Professional Development Program has developed and posted to the State Bar website various checklists, forms, articles and links to relevant resources to allow lawyers to follow best practices when engaged in succession planning, closing files, managing trust accounts, appearing before a tribunal in a virtual setting and starting a small law firm. You can find them at the Professional Development Program tab on the State Bar of New Mexico’s website.
