Did you know?

There is PTS (Post-traumatic Stress) and PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder). One could bet that nearly everyone has had PTS at some point in their life. PTS is a normal response to a traumatic or stressful event. Some people involved in a car accident or who experience complications from a surgery can exhibit symptoms of PTS. The fight-or-flight response is activated with PTS; our bodies tense and we breathe faster. While PTS and PTSD do share some overlapping symptoms, PTS can self-resolve for many people. PTSD, by contrast, is a mental health condition that generally requires diagnosis and treatment. PTS very often goes undiagnosed, but as we come to better understand it, we're learning to detect it earlier.

June: The Importance of Peer Support and Coaching

One of the most valuable resources available to any legal professional is the support of peers and coaches. The pressures of the legal world can be isolating, but having a trusted colleague or peer mentor coach to turn to can make all the difference. Peer support provides a sense of community and understanding, offering reassurance that you’re not alone in facing common challenges. A mentor can offer guidance, career advice, and personal support, helping you navigate both professional and emotional obstacles. If you don’t already have a mentor coach, check out SBNM’s coaching resources website at https://www.sbnm.org/Member-Services/Professional-Development-Program/Certified-Professional-Coaching.

Professional Development Program (PDP)

In addition to other resources, the Professional Development Program has developed and posted to the State Bar website various checklists, forms, articles, and links to relevant resources to allow lawyers to follow best practices when engaged in succession planning, closing files, managing trust accounts, appearing before a tribunal in a virtual setting, and starting a small law firm. You can find them at the Professional Development Program tab on the State Bar of New Mexico’s website.
