Meet Annel Belmont, our new Office Manager!

Photo of Annel Belmont

Annel Belmont joined our team on Tuesday, September 5!

From Annel:

Hi! My name is Annel Belmont and I am very excited to be part of this team. I have been working inside church administration since COVID, but besides that I volunteered in multimedia for much longer than that. I graduated from St. Petersburg College in 2020 with a degree in Management and Organizational Leadership.

I am very thankful for this position and for those who allowed me to have it. I hope that I am a helpful member of the team.

Annel Belmont, Office Manager

The Presbytery of Tampa Bay

455 Scotland Street, Ste.1

Dunedin, FL 34698

813-868-4800

office@pbty.com

Annel will be in the office in Dunedin on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (lunch break 1:30-2:30), and will also be doing some work for us and for the Synod of South Atlantic remotely outside of those hours.

Now that Annel is with us, emails sent to us using the form on our "Contact Us" webpage will be going to her instead of to Stated Clerk Bill Wildhack.

Welcome, Annel!

"Save the Date"

Welcome to (almost) "Fall" this week (or is it just "Hotember"?) in Tampa Bay!

"Save the date" cards for upcoming weddings and events have become popular as everyone's schedules have filled up with more and more upcoming events. I have one for an upcoming wedding on the fridge right now, and there have been others.

In our August 25 eNews, Holly Dillon mentioned an upcoming Leadership Summit on Saturday, October 21 for members of all commissions, committees and task forces of the presbytery to explore what God is now calling us to do and be as the Presbytery of Tampa Bay. Those plans are firming up quickly, there's a little more information in the first block below for everyone to see, and shortly we'll be sending emails directly to each member of a standing commission, committee, or task force of our presbytery to confirm plans for next month.

Our last eNews (link above 😉) also included a "save the date" for the annual gathering of the Association of Smaller Congregations next March; you'll find that repeated below as well for those who might have missed it.

New this month is the "save the date" for our November 2, 2023 Stated Meeting of the Presbytery of Tampa Bay. We'll be returning to First Presbyterian Church of Lakeland for the first time since COVID cancelled our plans to gather there in August 2020. As you'll see below, we plan to bring breakout groups before lunch back to our gathering this time, and we'll have more info on those in our next eNews.

And, for the last couple of issues of the eNews, we've also had --- and still have --- the dates of the 226th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (2024).

We're still looking for applications from a few more ministers and ruling elders to serve as commissioners or alternates, and at least one person who'll be between the ages of 18 and 23 years old on June 25, 2024 to serve as a Young Adult Advisory Delegate, too (more on that below, too!)

Also new this issue: an invitation to consider joining Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church on a pilgrimage to Israel March 10-20, 2024.

Blessings,

Rev. William A.Wildhack III

Stated Clerk and Manager of Communications

Presbytery of Tampa Bay

Direct: (813) 308-3200 (also voice only, no txt msgs)

statedclerk@pbty.com

P.S. about email addresses:

  • "statedclerk@pbty.com" and "bill@pbty.com" are aliases for the same email account, so you only need to use one or the other of those to reach me.
  • Some of you occasionally see and try to use "statedclerk@pbty.ccsend.com" as an email address for me.
  • Please do not use that email address. The "ccsend" part is added by Constant Contact when we send out the eNews as part of authenticating our emails as "not spam." But, there is no actual inbox attached to that address and email sent to it will never reach me. 😒

My work is supported by per capita funds from congregations in the Presbytery of Tampa Bay, which also help unite all Presbyterians in sharing God’s love through mission and ministry. Thank you!

Save the Date #1:

PTB Leadership Summit, Saturday, October 21, 9AM - 2PM

Presbytery of Tampa Bay Leadership Summit is the first of what may be several conversations to come

Flyer Image

This first "save the date" is for current members of all of the presbytery's own standing commissions, committees, and task forces.

This includes:

  • Coordinating Team (CT)
  • Commission on Ministry (COM)
  • Commission on Church Vitality (CCV) & New Worshiping Communities Committee (NWCC)
  • Commission on Preparation for Ministry (CPM)
  • Board of Trustees (BoT)
  • Committee on Nominations and Representation (CNR)
  • Racial Equity Task Force (RETF)
  • Permanent Judicial Commission (PJC)

If you are currently serving on any of those groups, you are invited to some initial conversation about vision and innovation as we consider what God may be calling us to do and be as the Presbytery of Tampa Bay.

Rev. Corey Schlosser-Hall, Deputy Executive Director of Vision, Innovation & Rebuilding for the PC(USA) will join us virtually to spark our conversation.

St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in New Tampa will be the primary site for these conversations (5340 Primrose Lake Circle, Tampa, FL 33647), but we will also have a limited online participation option, too.

Invitees should be receiving a separate email soon

with a registration link and other information.

Save the Date #2:

Stated Meeting of the Presbytery, Thursday, November 2, 9AM-2PM

Join with minister members, ruling elder commissioners, and others for an ON-SITE meeting at First Presbyterian Church of Lakeland Florida

PTB Logo - white background

Join us at First Lakeland on Thursday, November 2, for worship, fellowship, workshop/breakout groups, some important work, lunch, and a little more work after lunch.

+ + +

One consistent refrain since we went online for COVID has been "please bring back the breakout group time at stated meetings."

Well, your Coordinating Team is working on doing just that for our November meeting, putting together a menu of breakout groups for workshops, training, or discussion on different topics.

We expect to gather in the sanctuary for our opening session with worship, election of moderator and vice moderator for the next year, other business (including electing new classes to all of our standing commissions, disperse to breakouts around the building, regather for lunch in the fellowship hall, and conclude our business and other conversations around the tables.

+ + +

Look for more details and a registration link in a few weeks.

+ + +

In the meantime, ministry and covenant partners who would like to set up a display table for people to visit following registration and during breaks can send a note to Office Manager Annel Belmont at office@pbty.com to request a table.

226th General Assembly of the PC(USA)
The 226th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) meets June 25 - July 4, 2024.

Are you interested in serving as a commissioner to General Assembly or do you know someone who might be interested?

For some introductory info on what's involved in participating in next summer's online and in-person assembly, check out What Commissioners and Advisory Delegates Can Expect at the 226th General Assembly (2024) prepared by the Office of the General Assembly.

From the link above:

Why Serve as a Commissioner or Advisory Delegate?
God calls commissioners and advisory delegates to serve the church because of the unique gifts and abilities that make up who you are. As a commissioner or advisory delegate, you will join with others in discussing important topics and issues that have the power to form and reform both the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and beyond. Together you will discern where Christ is calling the church.

Interested in nominating yourself or someone else? Want to learn more about that process in the Presbytery of Tampa Bay?

Click here to review our presbytery's nomination procedure and policy for nominating yourself or someone else to serve as a Ruling Elder Commissioner (REC), Teaching Elder Commissioner (TEC), or Young Adult Advisory Delegate (YAAD).

NOTE: The Presbytery of Tampa Bay must elect two RECs and two TECs, and may also elect one YAAD at our November 2, 2023, stated meeting at First Presbyterian Church in Lakeland.

NEW THIS YEAR: The Office of the General Assembly has clarified that YAADs must be either

  • an active member of one of our congregations, or
  • a participant in a New Worshipping Community or an immigrant fellowship that has a relationship with the presbytery.
  • Please note that this is recent change in the Standing Rules to enable more opportunities for those ages 18-23 to respond to the call to serve as YAAD.

+ + +

Once you've taken a look our nomination procedure and the other links above and decided you're ready to nominate yourself or someone else for one of those roles, please click here to complete our online nomination form OR click here to download an off-line MS Word version of the form --- or reach out to us with questions or to connect with one of the commissioners to the 225th GA (2022).

Click here to visit the 226th GA's website. There's not a lot there (yet!), but you can also sign up for the On the Road to GA newsletter and follow Spirit of GA on Facebook.

Resources from the PC(USA) for creating safe ministries

Amendments to the Book of Order (a.k.a. Part II of the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)) this year reinforce and expand the requirements for policies to ensure safe ministries. For example, as amended this year, part of G-3.0106 on Administration of Mission in the Book of Order now says (new language in bold):

All councils shall adopt and implement the following policies: a sexual misconduct policy, a harassment policy, a child and youth protection policy, and an antiracism policy. Each council’s policy shall include requirements for boundary training which includes the topic of sexual misconduct, and child sexual abuse prevention training for its members at least every thirty-six months.

The link below includes a lot of helpful information to help churches in updating or replacing outdated policies (including samples), along with some resource suggestions for accomplishing the training that is now required of all members of a council of the church (e.g. all elders in active service on a session).

Creating Safe Ministries

God intends for the church and its ministries to be a safe place for all to encounter God and grow into lives of service and fulfillment. We are called to... Read more "

40 Days of Prayer: A Reflection on Addiction, Recovery, and Community

LIVE TAMPA BAY Faith Leadership Community invites faith leaders to be a part of this Recovery Month observance, continuing through October 9

Faith Leaders from different faith traditions, who pray in different ways, from diverse communities across the Tampa Bay Region, will be offering prayers on the Live Tampa Bay Facebook page at 7:00 p.m. every night through Recovery Month (September) and ending with a final prayer on October 9 (Indigenous People’s Day).

The mission of Live Tampa Bay is to improve positive outcomes for those suffering with substance use.

This is a community-wide campaign to unite congregations and communities in prayer. Many people in our congregations and communities are struggling with alcoholism, addiction, or other behavioral health issues, and they need a breakthrough in their lives. Others are new to recovery and may feel isolated or alone.

Members of our Presbytery who have led prayers as part of this observance (so far) include:

Check it out at 7:00 p.m. nightly at Live Tampa Bay on Facebook.

Rev. Sam Picard of the Missio Dei NWC and a community engagement coordinator for BayCare Behavioral Health writes:

I’d be happy to talk more about it with anyone who has questions, but people who would like to pray can fill out the form without talking to me as well.

Lake Seminole Presbyterian Church unexpectedly finds itself with an accidental BOGO leaving them with fifteen extra copies of the Participant's Book for the Fall 2023 quarter of The Present Word.

Rhonda Alvarez at Lake Seminole writes, "I am so hopeful that there is a congregation who would enjoy using the booklets for their Bible Study this fall." If you can use them, please reach out to Rhonda by clicking here.
Good Samaritan Church in Pinellas Park is clearing out spaces and finds itself with "many hymnals and many collection plates and communion plates that maybe another church would benefit from," and wrote asking if we happened to know of any churches in the area that need or might like more of either. Well, we do know of a few churches with members who see our eNews --- so here we are!

If you or someone you know might need or want any of these, please contact Jayms Battaglia, Good Sam's Office Administrator, by email or calling 727-544-8558.

Book of Order 2023-2025 is available now

This is NOT merely an administrative manual, but a profoundly theological book with a lot of counsel on how to live out our life together

For starters, check out F-1.01 God's Mission and F-1.03 Jesus Christ is Head of the Church in the "Foundations of Presbyterian Polity" section at the very start of the book, followed by F-1.03 The Calling of the Church.

After that, check out G-1.0101 The Mission of the Congregation and G-1.0102 The Fellowship of the Congregation at the start of "The Form of Government." The first page of Chapter Three: Councils of the Church is a powerful reminder of "the mutual interconnection of the church" through sessions, presbyteries, synods, and the General Assembly, including the reminder that "Councils of the church exist to help congregations and the church as a whole to be more faithful participants in the mission of Christ."

We all come to faith in different ways, and we've come to our congregations, fellowships, new worshiping communities, and service on councils of the church from various backgrounds. Language found not just in those sections but in others throughout the Book of Order and Book of Confessions help explain what it means to be a Christian and a member or minister in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Here's a taste:

G-1.0101 The Mission of the Congregation

The congregation is the church engaged in the mission of God in its particular context. The triune God gives to the congregation all the gifts of the gospel necessary to being the Church. The congregation is the basic form of the church, but it is not of itself a sufficient form of the church. Thus congregations are bound together in communion with one another, united in relationships of accountability and responsibility, contributing their strengths to the benefit of the whole, and are called, collectively, the church.

Through the congregation God’s people carry out the ministries of proclamation, sharing the Sacraments, and living in covenant life with God and each other. In the life of the congregation, individual believers are equipped for the ministry of witness to the love and grace of God in and for the world. The congregation reaches out to people, communities, and the world to share the good news of Jesus Christ, to gather for worship, to offer care and nurture to God’s children, to speak for social justice and righteousness, to bear witness to the truth and to the reign of God that is coming into the world.
