Why Women Attorneys Get Paid Less: What's Gender Bias Got to Do With It
Sept. 26, Webinar
11 a.m. - Noon
1.0 EIJ
Female lawyers’ median weekly pay is 26.5% less than male lawyers and the pay gap is larger for partners and only getting worse. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has commented that the gender pay gap is “an embarrassing reality of our economy.” In this presentation we review the history of the gender pay gap and determine if there has been any progress in the last 50 years. We will examine the causes of the gender pay gap and suggestions on how to eliminate it. Further, we will discuss a law in the United Kingdom that requires all companies with over 250 employees to file a yearly gender pay gap report with the difference between the average pay of men and women in an organization. We will review gender pay gap reports of legal firms in the United Kingdom and determine if this reporting requirement has helped bridge the gender pay gap.

The New Mexico Lawyer Assistance Program (NM LAP)
Did You Know?
Did you know Lawyers are twice as likely as the general population to experience suicidal ideation?
September is National Suicide Prevention Month— a time to remember the lives lost to suicide, recognize the millions who have experienced suicidal thoughts, and acknowledge the profound impact on individuals, families, and communities. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness about suicide prevention and promote messages of hope.
Throughout September, and all year long, we can prioritize suicide prevention by fostering connections within our communities, engaging with cultural perspectives, utilizing data and research, and collaborating with others to address this significant public health issue affecting millions of Americans.
How You Can Help:
Educate yourself and others about suicide prevention: Learn the warning signs and risk factors for suicide, how to support someone considering suicide, and familiarize yourself with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Visit the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC): Each year, the SPRC creates a resource full of ways to get involved in Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Here is the resource for 2024!
Read and share the 2024 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention and Federal Action Plan.
