Judicial College Offers Course for Attorneys

Who Aspire to Bench

The National Judicial College (NJC), the nation’s premiere educational institute for judges for more than 60 years, created a special course called Judicial Academy for attorneys who aim to one day join the judiciary.

The next Judicial Academy course is scheduled for October 27-31, 2025, at the National Judicial College campus in Reno. The course takes place during the NJC’s flagship General Jurisdiction course for newer judges, allowing for networking opportunities. There are a limited number of scholarships available for attorneys.

The course was first offered in 2019 and 37 alumni from the first four classes are now sitting judges. The course focuses on how to be elected or appointed to the bench, judicial ethics for candidates, and campaigning, as well as media and social media strategies. The course also provides insight into the day-to-day work of judging, the Model Code of Judicial Conduct, and courtroom and docket management. The week-long course utilizes dozens of faculty who are sitting judges or subject matter experts.

Each year, the NJC educates more than 12,000 judges from around the country through in-person and virtual courses and webinars focused on both foundational topics like decision-making, judicial writing, and evidence, as well as emerging issues including artificial intelligence, red flag laws, and digital evidence.

Creed of Professionalism and Civility Available for Download

A lawyer should always show personal courtesy and professional integrity in the fullest sense of those terms. In 2023, the State Bar of Nevada’s Board of Governors adopted its Creed of Professionalism and Civility. The revised creed is now available on the state bar’s website, including a downloadable PDF.

In fulfilling our duty to represent a client vigorously as lawyers, we will honor our obligations to the administration of justice in a rational, peaceful, and efficient manner. We remain committed to the rule of law as the foundation for a just and peaceful society.

Lawyers should exhibit courtesy, candor, and cooperation when participating in the legal system and dealing with the public. In addition, lawyers should demonstrate civility, professional integrity, personal dignity, and respect because these qualities are essential to the fair administration of justice and conflict resolution.

The Rules of Professional Conduct cannot address every conflict that may arise. These standards honor the spirit of the rules by balancing a lawyer’s obligation to protect and pursue a client’s legitimate interests zealously, within the bounds of the law, while maintaining a professional, courteous, and civil attitude toward all people in the legal system, as well as avoiding the appearance of any impropriety. Violations of these standards may trigger sanctions under Rules 4.4, 8.4(b), or others.

Legal Aid Center Hosting CLE on Representing Abused Children

The Pro Bono Project of the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada (LASCN) is hosting a CLE titled “Introduction to Representing Children in Abuse & Neglect Cases” at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, June 16, at the Legal Aid Center’s office and via GoTo Meeting.

In Nevada, children are parties to an abuse/neglect case brought by a child welfare agency; under Nevada law, those children have a right to representation by an attorney. This class is an introduction to effectively representing children in foster care. Attendees will learn how to establish an attorney/client relationship with clients of all ages. The class also provides an overview of the child welfare system and the life of an abuse/neglect case. The class will also touch upon common issues, including sibling connections, mental health, and delayed permanency.

Nevada-licensed or emeritus-certified attorneys can earn 2.0 general CLE credits by attending. To receive credit, attorneys must have at least one active pro bono case or take one new case. You can select a case or sign up for Ask-A-Lawyer sessions from www.lacsnprobono.org.
