Nevada Lawyers Stepping Up for 2025 Challenge

State Bar of Nevada licensees are on a record pace in the Section Pro Bono Challenge. The point total at the end of March 2024 was 627. However, at the end of March 2025, the point total reached 694. April points are also on pace for a new record.

There's one week left to boost section point totals in April while serving the community. This year, all section members can earn points, even if their section isn't officially participating. Volunteer now!

There are three ways to earn points:

Volunteering builds skills, earns CLEs, and feels great. Top volunteers will be recognized at the annual bar conference in June and at a luncheon with the Nevada Supreme Court and Nevada Court of Appeals this fall.

The challenge runs until May 31. Join us this year! Check out your section and the full leaderboard.

State Bar Committees Seek Volunteers for Board Openings

The State Bar of Nevada is looking for qualified individuals to fill open positions on several volunteer boards. To volunteer, submit an online application form by May 16.

The State Bar of Nevada is seeking passionate and dedicated volunteers to join the High School Mock Trial Committee. The Mock Trial Committee, which includes up to 15 members, provides direction for and oversees the operations of the regional and state Nevada high school mock trial competitions. The committee meets two or three times outside the mock trial competition. The majority of the committee’s time commitment comes during the spring when the two regional and one state championship occur.

The Northern Nevada Disciplinary board is seeking volunteer attorneys and lay members to fill open positions. The disciplinary boards are responsible for conducting screenings and hearings for the Office of Bar Counsel. Board members are appointed to panels to hear the presentation of cases where there are allegations of misconduct.

The Clients’ Security Fund (CSF) Committee has an open attorney position. The committee is responsible for making financial resources available to reimburse victims of attorney theft. Attorney committee members investigate 10 to 15 claims filed with the CSF each year. All committee members analyze the claims to determine if attorney fees were earned and/or if attorney theft took place, evaluate the ongoing financial condition of the CSF, and approve or deny reimbursement requests in accordance with these factors.

The Lawyer Advertising Advisory Committee has an open position. The committee meets once per month to review attorney advertisements submitted pursuant to bar regulations and renders advance advisory opinions upon request. Because much of the review and communication will be online, the best candidates should be proficient with computers, e-mail, and internet use. Committee members are appointed by the Board of Governors to two-year terms.

Legal Aid Center Breaks Ground on New Complex

Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada (LACSN) broke ground on a new Advocacy & Justice Complex earlier this month.

As LACSN has seen the demand for services quadrupling, existing facilities are not equipped to handle the increasing volume of cases. In response to the urgent need to improve and expand service to entire Las Vegas community, LACSN has embarked on building an Advocacy & Justice Complex—a dedicated space where survivors of violent crime and the elderly at risk of exploitation can find access to justice, protection, healing, and support.

Marisa Rodriguez, president of LACSN’s board of directors, along with Kris Englestad, Tom Thomas, and Tick Segerblom joined Barbara Buckley in presenting the promise of the new complex.

Instead of a shovel, guests departed with a small plant representing growth and renewal. Each plant included a child’s drawing about the family and community they hope to have. Anyone interested can see the drawings on the construction site fence on Charleston Boulevard in Las Vegas. See the donors.
