$523K for workforce programs
The College has received $523,700 in federal funding designed to cover most or all of the cost for individuals who want to train for careers in manufacturing, construction, information technology and health care.

The funding comes from the Reimagine Workforce Preparation Training program, meant to encourage people to switch to careers in high demand fields without taking on debt. The lengths of the training programs range from six weeks to nine months.

Marketing and Workforce and Career Solutions have created a webpage with full details at flcc.edu/reimagine.

“We live at a time when people need to switch careers more often to keep up with economic change. This grant eliminates a major hurdle for most people to switch careers for greater pay, advancement potential and job satisfaction,” said Todd Sloane, FLCC’s director of workforce development.

Training is offered at several locations and work for some programs can be completed online. The certified production technician program, for example, is currently offered simultaneously in Bloomfield and Penn Yan two evenings per week with the instructor conducting in-person labs on certain Saturdays. Students in the class learn manufacturing techniques using virtual reality headsets, shown above, in addition to learning how to use hand-tools.

Commencement update
Family grads: At FLCC, employees can hand the diploma cover to an immediate family member (spouse, son, daughter, sibling, parent). Today (May 2) is the deadline to notify Lenore Friend if you want to present the diploma to an immediate family member.

Processional Instructions
Faculty who are participating in the processional for one or more ceremonies should report to the back of the CMAC amphitheater 10 minutes before the student reporting time for the ceremony (Times listed on the commencement webpage are the student reporting times.)

Staffing instructions
Those providing general staffing for a ceremony should arrive 30 minutes before the student reporting time for the ceremony. This does not apply to those with responsibilities related to job function (e.g. campus police, disability services, etc.).

Instructions will be sent to those staffing the event during the week of May 9. If you would like to review your role in advance, please stop by CMAC on one of the following times:

  • Thursday, May 12, 12:45 to 1 p.m.
  • Monday, May 16, 11 a.m. to noon
  • Wednesday, May 18, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

For questions about commencement, contact Margaret Lorenzetti.

Decoration work group: The group making the grapevine arch for the bridge to CMAC for commencement will gather on Saturday, May 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Gina Lee's home in Newark. The rain date is Saturday, May 14. Assistance is also needed on Thursday, May 19, to decorate the bridge to CMAC. Anyone who can assist should make arrangements with Gina via email or phone at (315) 781-9440 Ext. 1183.
Change in login terminology
The College is changing the name of logon credentials as a part of the transition away from WebAdvisor to Colleague Self Service. What is currently referred to as “WebAdvisor username/password” will become “FLCC username/password.”

Information Technology and other offices will begin this transition in documentation and web references starting this week. Services will be updated and naming changed over the course of the next few months, specific to affected groups and workflows. These names continue to refer to the same logon credentials, so no need to worry.

Employees' logon credentials will not change, just references to them. New students beginning to register in mid-May will know them as FLCC username/password. Please contact the IT Helpdesk if you have questions.
Creative writing update and invite
Graduates in the A.A. Creative Writing program
will give readings on Friday, May 13, from 4 to 5 p.m. at ArtSpace36, the College's gallery in downtown Canandaigua.

Visitors can attend in person or online using this Webex link.

The event features Amanda Brockner, Leah Terry and Elizabeth Wagner reading from their original work representing several favorite genres.

They will be joined by
current student Lydia Miller who will read an original poem while graduate, Ollie Richmond (A.A. American Sign Language) provides sign language interpretation for a cross-experiential communication.

The event will be hosted by faculty members in the creative writing program, Meg Gillio, Maureen Maas-Feary and Jon Palzer.

The event is free and open to the public. Masks are optional but recommended.
Author and publisher Peter Conners from BOA Editions in Rochester read from segments of his latest novel and collection of prose poems on Laker Day. He invited students to freely interrupt and ask questions at any point, and on several occasions, they comfortably shared their observations. Peter offered feedback, and upon concluding the event, shifted to a casual book-signing and chat. The A.A. Creative Writing students along with Professors Meg Gillio and Jon Palzer listened to Peter's thoughts on 'zines, the landscape of literary journals and contests, and establishing a sense of committed time for disciplined writing and for exploring publication.

Quick takes
Fundraising challenge: Thursday, May 5, is the Laker Day of Giving, a 24-hour challenge which offers the community an opportunity to make an impact on the lives of FLCC students.

If the FLCC Foundation reaches its goal of 150 gifts in 24 hours, a generous donor will give and additional $10,000 in support of FLCC students.

Employee engagement: The Employee Engagement Committee, a subcommittee of College Council, will hold its first and last meeting of the semester on Monday, May 9, at noon in the main campus café. Faculty members Kellie Gauvin and Izy Grooms are co-chairs.
Topics include employee recognition, engagement activities, and sharing ideas for how to get back to connecting with colleagues.

Alumni survey: All FLCC alumni are invited to share their thoughts in an Alumni Association survey about future events. Those who complete the survey by May 15 will be entered into a drawing for some College gear. Alumni are also encouraged to share information for the class notes in the next Laker magazine using this online form.

Gym closing: The main campus gym will be closed May 17 to 24 so the floor can be waxed.

Media Watch:
Volunteers needed: The Finger Lakes Workforce Investment Board (FLWIB) will hold a career exploration event for regional high school students at the main campus on Wednesday, May 25 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nearly 1,000 high school students are expected to view exhibits in the trades, health care and agriculture. Several FLCC programs will be featured. Volunteers are needed to act as tour guides and assist with food service and registration. Morning and afternoon shifts are available. Anyone who can help should fill out aform on the FLWIB website.

How to dispose of hand sanitizer: The individual bottles of NYS Clean hand sanitizer provided in summer 2020 expire this month. Expired sanitizer, although safe to use, may no longer be effective because the alcohol evaporates over time.  Hand sanitizer is flammable and should not be put in the trash. Bring unused NYS Clean sanitizer to collection containers in the One Stop Center, Student Life, Center for Student Well-Being, library, Campus Police, campus centers and the viticulture center.
