The New Mexico Lawyer Assistance Program (NM LAP)

Did You Know?

Did you know that Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression triggered by seasonal changes, typically starting in late fall and lasting through winter? It's linked to a reduction in sunlight, which can disrupt your body's internal clock and lower serotonin and melatonin levels—chemicals that regulate mood and sleep.

Cool Fact:

Women are four times more likely than men to experience SAD, and it's most common in young adults. Interestingly, people who live farther from the equator are also at a higher risk due to reduced sunlight exposure in winter months.

Combat SAD by incorporating light therapy, regular exercise, and mindful activities like journaling or meditation into your routine. Even short outdoor walks on cloudy days can make a big difference!

Judicial Wellness Program (NMJWP)

Fun is sometimes elusive in our busy jobs, but as judges and attorneys, we cannot under rate the power of play. Creative rest is a place where this can be advantageous. Having a sketch pad at your desk with some colored pencils or a journal where you can escape into putting your thoughts down and creating story around your experiences can sometimes feel therapeutic in our busy day. It also gives your mind a break to refresh and recharge. So maybe plan to meet your friend for pickleball during lunch or go walk around the Albuquerque BioPark on your lunch hour. Those things can stimulate parts of our brain that help us be our best selves when making the weighty decisions we make or solving the difficult problems of our clients.

Professional Development Program (PDP)

Did you know that the PDP offers nine (9) different confidential online self-assessments for your practice. Whether it’s intaking, accepting or terminating client representation, best communication practices, managing fees and trust accounts, or how to take care of yourself in the midst of a busy, stressful practice, these assessments are designed to support best practices. Take one, some or all of them today at PDP SELF-ASSESSMENTS. They’re anonymous, confidential, short, free and informative.

Support the Santa Fe Dreamers Project!

For ten years, the Santa Fe Dreamers Project has been at the forefront of providing compassionate, high-quality immigration legal services to individuals in need, including asylum seekers, young immigrants, LGBTQ+ clients, and families seeking reunification. We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to uplifting and supporting those in our community who face substantial barriers to safety and stability. With your support, we can continue to build a more just and inclusive New Mexico.

Under the New Mexico Supreme Court’s Rule 24-108 on pro bono service, attorneys and law firms can support nonprofit legal services either through pro bono hours or financial contributions. Every contribution directly funds our legal programs and advocacy efforts, helping us serve clients who might otherwise go unrepresented.

How to Give

Contributing is straightforward and secure through our website at santafedreamersproject.org/donate. Should your firm wish to discuss partnership opportunities or event sponsorship in the future, contact miles@santafedreamersproject.org or by phone at 505-312-1566.

Gene Franchini New Mexico High School Mock Trial Competition

Judges Needed in Albuquerque and Las Cruces

The Gene Franchini New Mexico High School Mock Trial Competition needs judges. The qualifier competitions will be held Feb. 21 and 22 in Albuquerque and Las Cruces at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court in Albuquerque and the U.S. District Court in Las Cruces.

Mock trial is an innovative, hands‐on experience in the law for high school students of all ages and abilities. Every year hundreds of New Mexico teenagers and their teacher advisors and attorney coaches spend the better part of the school year researching, studying and preparing a hypothetical courtroom trial involving issues that are important and interesting to young people.
