Robert Lindsay Smallidge Sr. Working on His Model of the Whaler, "Alice Mandell" #7877

Digital Archive Logo small

Robert L. Smallidge was born in Northeast Harbor to Elmer and Louise (Lawler) Smallidge. He founded Mt. Desert Cleaners in 1921 and ran it until his retirement in 1971. He was best known for his model ship building and love of genealogy and was a naval veteran of World War I. Robert may have built this model using plans that were first published by the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago and later reissued in “The Whale Ship Book” by Joseph T. Higgins. The Science Museum Group has a zoomable image of a model of the “Alice Mandell” for those curious to take a closer look.
