April 24th: "Can Politics be Influenced by UU Principles?" Jack Shu
Long-time Summit member Jack Shu will talk about how his UU faith inspired him to run for public office and how UU principles under-gird his politics.
Jack Shu has been a member of Summit since 1989, and has worked on various committees over the last thirty years. His primary interests were in social action, legislative ministry and raising UU voices on justice issues.
Jack retired in 2005 after a 29 year career with the California Department of Parks and Recreation, mostly as a Park Superintendent. He also served 25 years as the President of the Cleveland National Forest Foundation, known for trying to save our local wilderness through better City building and transportation.
In 2020 Jack decided to run for public office, and was elected for a four year term, to the La Mesa City Council. He represents La Mesa on the Metropolitan Transit System Board, the 2nd District on the Air Pollution Control District and as an alternate on the SANDAG Board. He has influenced local government on matters like climate emergency, transportation planning, police reform, local air pollution, affordable housing availability, promoting art and culture and identifying outcome measures for government.
Registration is recommended, but not required, to attend in person. You will make life easier for our ushers if you click on the link to register and sign up for either indoor seating (vaccination and masking required) or outdoor seating (vaccination not required, masking strongly encouraged). The outdoor seating area will have amplified audio, but no video. If you don’t register beforehand, you will need to see an usher when you arrive so they can collect contact information for you, and if the sanctuary is filled, you will have to sit outside.

Further information about our Sunday services
As mentioned above, reservations are recommended for attendance in person in order to be certain there will be space for you with our limited seating. Please visit https://rsvp.church/r/1qukRINK to sign up.
There is seating inside the sanctuary (vaccinations and masking required) and outside the sanctuary in the outdoor greeting area (vaccinations not required, masking strongly encouraged).
Childcare and religious exploration for children and youth are available. When you register online, please indicate the ages of any children or youth who will be coming with you.
COVID mitigation: We have set up air filtration units in the sanctuary, in the RE areas, and in the staff offices. High quality masks are required indoors. We have a supply of KN-95 masks available for those who arrive without one. Sunday service leaders who remove their masks when they are speaking in the service have taken a home COVID test on Sunday morning, and tested negative.
COVID evaluation: We will decide each Wednesday whether our Sunday service will include an in-person component, based on COVID case rates in the county.
We have a new assistive hearing system in the sanctuary. Our Hearing Loop system can transmit sound directly into an appropriately-equipped hearing aid or cochlear implant. To receive the signal, manually activate the T-coil, Telecoil or Hearing Loop setting on your hearing aid or cochlear implant. If you would like hearing assistance but don’t wear hearing aids, please ask an usher for a Loop receiver to use during the service.
Please bear with us as we hold our services in these new ways. We are trying our best to adjust to these times and to hold safe and meaningful services.
Welcome! We hope you will join us on Sunday, in person or on Zoom. Portions of our services are also posted eventually to our YouTube channel, https://tinyurl.com/SummitUUFYouTube

An Invitation from the 8th Principle Collaboration Group of San Diego
The 8th Principle Collaboration Group of San Diego invites you to join us in beginning a study of Widening the Circle of Concern. The first three sessions of our group will meet virtually this spring at 10:00 a.m. on three Saturday mornings: April 30, May 21, and June 11. We have found these discussions to be enriching and fulfilling work and hope to share that joy among our congregations. This work is an affirming way to either celebrate the adoption and implementation of the 8th principle or work towards its adoption. These sessions will be informal and open to all San Diego UUs. Each month will have a chapter from the book to read before our discussion. We hope you’ll return each month, but joining for a topic that particularly interests you would work as well. The book is available for free online, including in audio format, and is also available for purchase as a printed book or kindle book (links below).
- April 30: Getting Started: Preface - Trends
- May 21: Theology
- June 11: Governance
If you are interested, please sign-up here:
https://bit.ly/3CXmdHb
Read or listen online (free)
Download the pdf (free)
Purchase the paperback book
Purchase the kindle edition
(If you would like to purchase the Report and need help with the cost, JTW, i.e. Journey Toward Wholeness will help cover it).
What is Widening the Circle of Concern?
Widening the Circle of Concern: Report of the UUA (Unitarian Universalist Association) COIC (Commission on Institutional Change) is the final work of the Commission, presented in June 2020. This book “represents the culmination of the Commission’s work analyzing structural and systemic racism and white supremacy culture within Unitarian Universalism and makes recommendations to advance long-term cultural and institutional change that redeems the essential promise and ideals of Unitarian Universalism” (from back cover).
Read more about the Commission on Institutional Change here.
What is the 8th Principle Collaboration Group of San Diego?
Our group formed in 2021 as part of the work San Diego UU congregations are doing to implement the 8th principle. We collaborate to share ideas and resources; we celebrate being able to do the work of the 8th principle in community. We usually meet monthly and welcome new members. Use the google form above to join our mailing list.

Summit UU Fellowship
Covenant of Care
Revised 3/16/22
In practicing our Unitarian Universalist Principles and Purposes and with Love as our guide, we covenant to support the care and well-being of all during our in-person gatherings using the following points of care. We recognize that there are members of our community who cannot be vaccinated. We also recognize that the variants are highly contagious and airborne. Therefore, we care for the most vulnerable in our Fellowship by:
- At all Summit indoor gatherings, masks are required for everyone over the age of 2-years old.
- At all Summit outdoor gatherings, masks are optional, and social distancing is encouraged.
- At all indoor in-person events, all people 5-years old and up need to be fully vaccinated.
- Staying home rather than attending in-person gatherings if we are ill or we are feeling like we are becoming sick, have a fever or have been exposed to someone who is ill. (This includes colds, flu, etc.)
- Agreeing to notify the Summit Office and the Fellowship Community if we have been exposed to COVID-19 and have been physically in contact with members of the community on campus or at a Summit function.
This is a living document and will be adapted as our community care needs evolve. As of 3/16/22, we will be operating at a 50% pre-COVID occupancy.
Sanctuary - No more than 60 people
Salon - No more than 20 people
Library - No more than 6 people
We have implemented an RSVP system for people to reserve their spot indoors.
Outdoor seating will be available, too, with speakers for people to hear the service.
A weekly email will go out at the start of each week for people to RSVP. Be sure to watch for the email!
If your committee or group would like to meet in-person on the Summit Campus, please fill out a Room Request Form, found HERE, and then email the completed form to our Office Administrator at: summituuf@gmail.com.

We are excited to share, as part of our technological upgrades, we have installed a Hearing Loop System in the Sanctuary to assist those with hearing loss to hear more clearly.
A Hearing Loop is an assistive listening system that transmits the sound directly into ones' hearing aids or cochlear implants rather than depending on the sound coming from the loudspeakers. In doing so, all ambient and background noise is reduced to an absolute minimum, providing clear sound directly to user’s ears.
To receive the Loop signal, manually activate your T-coil, Telecoil or Hearing Loop setting on your hearing aid or cochlear implant. If you don’t know if you have a T-coil, or if yours is not properly programmed, consult with your audiologist or hearing aid professional. If you don’t wear hearing aids, ask to use a Loop receiver at Summit to receive the sound.
If you would like to learn more about the Hearing Loop or if you have questions about your own hearing aid's compatibility, we will be hosting an education event at Summit where we will be joined by an outreach and advocacy specialist from OTOjOY – the company that installed our Hearing Loop. Whether or not you live with hearing loss, you are welcome to attend and to learn more about how this incredible technology works.
If you would like hearing assistance but don’t wear hearing aids, please ask an usher for a Loop receiver to use during the service.

Sunday Café organizer needed
In order for Sunday Café to continue, we need a volunteer to organize it. Juana Page did a wonderful job of organizing the café before the pandemic, but she would like to pass the position on to someone else.
If you would like to work with staff to figure out a safe and sustainable way for volunteers to provide coffee and snacks, and to organize volunteers to handle this from week to week, contact Linda Peck (619) 562-0833, summituuf@gmail.com.

We hope to start planning for the return of the choir. There have certainly been some changes since we last sang at a service over two years ago, but we hope to sing for you again soon.
This would be an excellent time for new singers to join - no audition required!
If you like to sing and think you might enjoy singing with a group, we'd love to have you join the choir.
Please get in touch with Laurel Bernstein, laurelbernstein@yahoo.com or (619) 933-2808 if you are interested and/or would like more information.

In the African country of Kenya, millions of people still bear the scars of the British invasion and occupation.
"THE COLONIZED And the Scramble for Africa", by Wanjiru Warama is a family and community memoir that shows how farm-workers on British colonial farms lived during that occupation.
There is also a copy available in the Summit library.
