SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER
FEBRUARY 13th @ 5:30PM

Celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday, Shrove Tuesday (also called “Pancake Tuesday” or “Pancake Day”) is the final day before the 40-day period of Lent begins. This year it falls on Feb. 13.
Its name comes from the Germanic-Old English word “shrive,” meaning absolve, and it is the last day of the liturgical season historically known as Shrovetide. Because it comes directly before Lent, a season of fasting and penitence, this was the day that Christians would go to be “shriven” by their confessor.

Shrove Tuesday also became a day for pre-fasting indulgence. In particular, the need to use up rich ingredients such as butter, milk, sugar and eggs before Lent gave rise to the tradition of eating pancakes on this day.

We hope you will join your CUMC family for a night of feasting and fun before the start of our Lenten disciplines on Ash Wednesday!

Please RSVP via the SignUp Genius…
Following Shrove Tuesday, we will begin the Lenten season. Lent is the 40 days (not including Sundays) preceding Easter, and it is a season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The first day of Lent is Ash Wednesday, and it is a day that is marked with a focus on repentance. In biblical times, the wearing of sackcloth and heaping ashes on one's head were signs of mourning and repentance. This is where we get the tradition of imposing ashes upon one's forehead in the sign of the cross.

This year, Ash Wednesday falls on Valentine's Day. With these two special days happening at the same time, I have chosen to modify our traditional plans slightly. At noon on February 14, we will have our Ash Wednesday Service in the sanctuary. That evening, instead of having a service, we will open the sanctuary from 6:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. for an Ash Wednesday observance that will be "come and go." I will be present to impose ashes, and you may remain for a time of personal prayer.

Our focus this Lent will be on our personal testimonies. The Lenten sermon series is entitled "This Is My Story," learning about what our personal testimony is, how we can shape it and share it with others in faithful ways.
