Dear Siblings in Christ,
As I write, we have just come through one of the summer thunderstorms that Iowa is well known for—flashing lightning, booming thunder, gusting wind, pouring down rain, the drain in the road at the bottom of my driveway challenged by all the water flowing into it at once. It was the kind of storm that can flatten smaller plants. We see them after the wind and the rain stops, bent over as though someone has taken hold of their tops and pushed them to the ground.
It makes me think of the resilience of the tallgrass prairie that once covered most of Iowa. The tallgrass prairie evolved to withstand these summer thunderstorms, with all the wind and pounding rain that they bring. It is notable that the survival of the prairie plants isn’t based on the individual plants becoming bigger and stronger, or better adapted as individual plants to withstand the forces of the rain and the wind. Each individual prairie plant, by itself, could easily be flattened by the thunderstorms. The adaptation of the tallgrass prairie that allows it to survive is that the plants are surrounded by each other and depend on each other for support. Individually, plants of the prairie would struggle to survive. Together as one prairie, one mutually interdependent ecosystem, they not only survive but thrive in the Iowa environment.

August 2, 2026
An Iowa Ecumenical Landmark in Durant
In a little burg in the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa and the Southeastern Synod of Iowa, ELCA, there are two churches who share one Pastor. On Sunday, August 2, 2026 folks from both congregations met at St. Paul’s Episcopal and Gloria Dei Lutheran Churches, Durant, along with Episcopal Bishop Betsey Monnot and Lutheran Bishop Amy Current to institute, induct, and install Pastor Rodney Underwood who has been serving them for just about a year.
Using a liturgy that combined the rich history of The Book of Common Prayer and Evangelical Lutheran Worship, the people began their worship at St. Paul’s, where Pastor Rodney was instituted and inducted as their Priest-in-charge. Then between the Epistle and the Gospel, the joint congregation processed to Gloria Dei, singing as they went. The service continued with the reading of the Gospel, the institution of Pastor Rodney as the Pastor of Gloria Dei, a reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows, and Communion. Bishops Current and Monnot each presided at their own churches and joined with one another in other aspects of the service, including a joint Episcopal Blessing of the joint congregation.
We thank God for the unity and ecumenism shown by the people of the Southeastern Iowa Synod and the Diocese of Iowa. What started as a dream as we came together in theory in 1999 and 2000 when our churchwide bodies voted to bring us into full communion, became a reality in Durant on a beautiful day in August.
One service…two congregations…one pastor…two bishops…one Church.
Pictured above: Bishop Current, Bishop Monnot and Pastor Rodney rejoice in the show of ecumenical unity both in this service, in Durant, and in the Church.
