MARCH 2025

Bishop's Upcoming Visitations:

  • Apr. 13: St. John's, Keokuk
  • Apr. 27: St. Mark's, Des Moines
  • May 18: New Song, Coralville

Friends, it’s been quite a month. Our world and our country have been changing rapidly for years now, and the pace of change has only accelerated. As the world around us changes, so too you and I are called by God to change as we continue to live out God’s call to be the Body of Christ in the world. We have to learn new ways to be effective as disciples of Jesus, loving our neighbors as ourselves.

For me, recently, my discipleship path has included going down to the Iowa statehouse and testifying against removing civil rights from transgender people in our state. I told anyone who was listening that Jesus’ command to do to others as we would have them do to us meant that it was wrong for the legislators to remove civil rights from any group of people, assuming of course that they would not want their own civil rights removed.

I want you to understand that this kind of political activism is outside of my comfort zone. I never used to offer to testify at public hearings. But as I have continued to grow and be transformed by God, this work has clearly become part of my call as bishop. It is part of the lifelong conversion that I am experiencing, and it is God’s grace that sustains me in those moments.

I explored the themes of grace, call, and lifelong conversion in this week’s Lenten video, which you can find below.

One way that we can work together in our congregations to live out God’s call faithfully in a changing world is by learning tools that help us recognize the changes that our congregations are experiencing and think intentionally and realistically about how we as congregations can respond. If this is of interest to you, I invite you to consider signing up for my track at Summer Ministry School and Retreat. More information is HERE. Because this track is focused on tools you can use in your congregation, it is particularly effective when a team from a congregation signs up together. Consult with the leadership of your congregation and see if this is something that you would like to do.

Blessings!

+Betsey

Faith in Action: Advocacy & Public Policy Ministry

Why This Ministry Matters

"We have for too long ceded the 'Christian' response to public policy matters to our fundamentalist and evangelical brothers and sisters, with whom we frequently have very divergent interpretations of the call of Jesus on our lives. It's time for us to stand up for our neighbors, all of our neighbors and for justice for everyone."

- Deacon Jeanie Smith, diocesan lobbyist

GILEAD Grant Spotlight

Participation in public events encourages the congregation to “get out there” and be with the people of our parish (parish as in a geography, not merely a congregation) and furthers our work of being present to wide groups of people and it is a public demonstration of our commitment to respect the dignity of every human being. This grant will extend funding of our evangelical presence in future Pride events and allow us to expand to other public events such as Band Fest Parade, Clear Lake July 4th Parade, Blessing of the Animals, Shrove Tuesday Pancakes. Having these materials furthers our ability to have an active, outward facing, posture in our community. Grant funds will be used to purchase items needed to create a physical exhibitor booth at indoor and outdoor events, to create custom marketing materials that can be distributed at various community events

Learn More about St. John's

We are expanding our new efforts to reach our congregation, the surrounding community and outward by improving internal communications, and through outreach through social media. In the last year we have used an internal gift to install a new internal network structure capable of handling streaming media. We hope to streamline communications to make it much easier for the clergy and volunteer members to create, manage, and communicate all the work being done by the parish. Grant funds will be used to fund the next phase in our plan to expand our technology for church management, communication and social media presence by purchasing a camera, wireless microphone, camcorder, and other equipment.

We plan to upgrade our current 1970’s system to a modern system, which includes a mixer, new microphones, and speakers, increasing our effectiveness to share God’s word. We are also requesting a portable system to use outdoors, which will facilitate our outreach in our community. We have had some comments made by members of the congregation that they cannot understand what is being said, and several of the microphones interfere with each other. These technology upgrades will help us relay the word of God for our congregation and community and expand the growth of our church. Grant funds will pay for the installation and materials for this new sound system.

Learn More about St. Luke's

We have many new members who recently came from other countries and they do not own cars, so most of them miss out on some of our Sunday service. We would like to pick them up, however we lack reliable means of transport. Having a vehicle will let us pick up church members from their home, take them to and from Sunday services and other church activities such as meeting with other church members at the park and youth camp. This will help us promote the Good News of Christ and bring people to church and keep them in the church. Grant funds will go toward the vehicle purchase, and we will ask the congregation to make contributions and fundraise to support the vehicle.
