Alma E Hallenborg

Alma E. Hallenborg - #5615

Alma Hallenborg, the librarian who helped Meredith Hutchins come up with a new shelving scheme for the children’s room, was the winter librarian from 1948 to 1959 and a bookstore aficionado. She worked at both Scribner’s Book Store on Fifth Avenue and Gotham Book Mart in New York during its height as a literary hub when authors such as W. H. Auden, Lawrence Durrell, William Carols Williams, Anaïs Nin, and Marianne Moore were honored by garden parties and readings. In Maine she worked a the Brown & Himebaugh Book Store on Main Street in Bar Harbor, which she purchased after World War II and then relocated to Mount Desert Street. Having honed her ability to select books over a long career in bookstores, she was a valuable asset for the library and well known for the many books she added to the collection during her time as librarian.
