During the 1940s and 50s, children’s books were purchased once a year in November. During Children’s Book Week, the new books with their colorful covers would be on display for the town’s children to look at. Each child would be allowed to sign up to borrow one book at the conclusion of the week. Meredith Hutchins remembers picking a book to be a big decision; she hoped that other children would be fast readers if they borrowed books she wanted to read.
