Beloved,
Sometimes it's so hard to know what to pray for or even how to pray. At least I find that to be so. After the horrific killing in Minnesota on Wednesday morning all I could do when I got home was light a candle and put it in the window, praying that the small flame would light the skies like a beacon. Sort of like calling Batman I was calling God. It was all I could do - light that candle and sit there with my heart laid open.
If you also are struggling with how to pray in this time know that you are not alone. I don't have any answers, really, but do have some thoughts. Prayer takes many forms but each form requires that our hearts be laid open. Whether in rage or grief or joy or doubt or helplessness, true prayer opens our hearts to hear/feel/know God's presence, or at least to be open to those things. But we need also be aware that rage, grief, doubt, helplessness, even joy, without open hearts, can prevent us from hearing/feeling/knowing God's presence. So if you need to be angry, be angry with an open heart. If you are full of joy, be so with an open heart. If you feel helpless, open your heart to God's love.
Light a candle and set it as a beacon right next to your open heart. God will be there. (And maybe Batman, too.)
Beloved, you are beautiful. I love you and God adores you.

Cathedral Arts Presents Tom DiMenna: Story Songs of the 70s
Maine-based singer/songwriter Tom DiMenna & Friends present Story Songs of the 70s featuring songs by three legendary songwriters of the vinyl era — Gordon Lightfoot, Cat Stevens, and Harry Chapin.
This folk-rock act blends lush vocals, intricate guitar playing and iconic story songs into a sound that’s both intimate and powerful. While rooted in the folk tradition, this special winter setlist of reflective wintry songs is balanced with upbeat favorites and toe-tappers sure to bring audiences together with cheer during the colder months (Song for A Winter’s Night by Gordon Lightfoot, Into White by Cat Stevens, Mr. Tanner by Harry Chapin…) — performed with heart, humor, and resonance.

Resurrection Hope Unpacked: A Black History Month Book Study
This February, join the diocesan Racial Justice and Healing Committee for a three-week book study on Resurrection Hope: A Future Where Black Lives Matter by the Rev. Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas.
In this book, Dr. Douglas reflects on how a “white way of knowing” has come to dominate American identity and even to shape the consciousness of Christians.
Meetings will be held on Mondays February 2, 9, and 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. on Zoom and discussion will be led by members of the Racial Justice and Healing Committee. Each session will be focused on different chapters of the book:
• February 2: Chapters 1 & 2
• February 9: Chapters 3 & 4
• February 16: Chapter 5 & The Afterward
Additionally, Dr. Douglas will attend the February 9 meeting. She will participate in the discussion and be available for participants to ask questions.
Copies of the book may be purchased directly from the publisher or on Bookshop.org. If you would like to participate but purchasing the book is not in your budget, reach out to the Cathedral. Scholarships are available.
You do not need to attend every session to participate, but registration is required. Register online. Zoom links will be distributed to registrants ahead of the first meeting on February 2.
This study is being held during Black History Month. Taking place every February, Black History Month honors and celebrates Black history and culture in the United States and across the globe. Learn more about Black History Month.
