Head of School's Reflection

Dear Redeemer Family,

Last week, many parents and faculty members were fortunate to join Kate Richa, family therapist and adjunct profession at Towson University, for a presentation and discussion titled, "Understanding Social Emotional Development in the Modern Age." While I wish I could capture every detail of Kate's talk in this reflection, I would like to share my biggest take-aways.

·        We are all human, and the notion of perfect parenting is the enemy of good parenting. Being a parent in today’s world is hard!

·        We continue to work through the effects of the pandemic. Experts believe the impact on development may last through 2034.

·        We need to lean into each other; societies function best when done in community.

·        To help our children develop into impactful and productive adults, we need to impart strong social-emotional skills through teaching and modeling. Social-emotional learning encompasses who we are, what we do, and what we value.

·        To have a friend, you have to be a friend. Active listening, effective communication, cooperation, and self-advocacy are essential skills for building strong relationships.

·        Most importantly, every life has a story!

I feel fortunate to be part of community like Redeemer that genuinely demonstrates care and love for our youngest children. Last week’s discussion and today’s Donuts at the Day School are true testaments to that!

Have a great weekend! GO RAVENS!

Best regards,

Mary

Pre-first Grade with Mrs. Barta

The pre-first children have had “SNOW” much fun getting back into our routine from the holiday break and have been busy at work. In Language Arts, we did a story comparison of the book, The Mitten by Jan Brett and Alvin Tresselt. We discussed the many similarities and differences throughout the stories. We continue to work on our phonics skills and learned 8 new glued sounds with words ending in -ng or -nk. Next, we will learn about consonant blends in words and sounding them out while reading and writing. Our handwriting remains to be a focus as well as punctuation in sentences when writing. In our next Math unit, we will learn all about money and the value of each coin. We will practice exchanging smaller coins for larger valued coins (EX. 10 pennies can be traded for a dime or 2 nickels.) Money is a difficult concept to grasp so we will continue to work on this throughout the year. Please ask your children to help you “pay” the next time you buy something using coins. Next week, we will focus on polar bears and hibernation.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

We were all excited to return to school after the holiday break! We have enjoyed some well-deserved snow days, as well as lots of learning and activity in school. The kindergarten through 3rd grade classes were treated to SEL lessons with Mrs. Hobson. They discussed the power of our words and the importance of respecting personal space. Classes also learned about the incredible impact Martin Luther King, Junior's work has had on our community and world. Students were inspired to think of ways they might make our world a better place too! We were thrilled with the attendance at our Parent Education Evening and are grateful to Kate Richa for imparting practical and important advice and insight regarding the social and emotional development in our children today. Last but not least, we were thrilled to welcome our guests for Donuts at the Day School. The morning was full of smiles, fun, and an incredible Purple Friday Pep Rally! Go Ravens!
