"The Great Gift of Easter is Hope!"

-Basil C Hume

Day School Chaplain's Reflection

Dear Redeemer Community,

This week in chapel we are telling the stories of Holy Week. From Jesus’ entry to Jerusalem with palm branches and shouts of “Hosana!;” to the Last Supper and his act of love and service as he washed his friends feet; to the sad and serious story of the cross on Good Friday: we are making are way through the stories that lead up to Easter. But we aren’t at Easter yet – we haven’t heard the end of the story yet. And so we wait to hear the good news of the resurrection like Jesus’s friends did all those years ago.

The stories of Holy Week are powerful. What is it like to experience deep and profound love? What does it mean to let a friend down who needs you? Or see something happen that isn’t fair? Or hope for something you’re not sure will happen? These are universal experiences that can be found in the stories of Holy Week, and Redeemer offers many ways to engage with them. You can find a full list of our Holy Week services by clicking the button below, but I especially encourage you and your children to attend Walk Through Holy Week on Good Friday, 3/29. The program is designed for children ages 5-11, but appealing to anyone who learns best through stories. Participants will gather in the chapel (entering through the choir room, rather than from the driveway outside), welcome Jesus with palms and Hosanas, sit in on the Last Supper, and walk along with the cross, learning the stories of Holy Week as they go. Children younger than 5 are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Everyone is welcome at each of our services, including the Easter Sunday Eucharists at 7:30, 9, and 11 am, and the parish Egg Hunt following the 9 am liturgy. If you have any questions, you can reach me at rogus@redeemerbaltimore.org or 443-571-2736.

Happy Easter!

The month of March went by in a blur. We spent the first week continuing to talk about and experience all kinds of weather outside! It provided us with the chance to learn more about the world around us and the conditions needed for different types of weather. We also learned the expression “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb” but the jury is still out whether it applies or not! We had fun diving deep into the meaning of community during Community Week and we hope you enjoyed our special time together during Brunch Bunch. We are always so excited to welcome special visitors to our classrooms. Everyone came back from the break refreshed and ready for the last stretch! (Can you believe it?!) Community Week provided a perfect transition for our Community Helpers theme. There has been a lot of talk about real-life heroes, superheroes, generosity and thankfulness. Ask your child how they are heroes themselves… As always, throughout the month, we have been exposed to hands-on math problems, phonemic games, and we have focused on lowercases e, r, p, j, l, h and k. While still working on all these subject matters, our last week is dedicated to getting ready for Easter and we cannot wait to see if the Easter Bunny pays a visit to the Redeemer grounds. Thank you all very much for your help in making this event a success!

WINTER ENRICHMENT @ REDEEMER

Enrichment @ Redeemer this winter was a huge success. Our Super Chef class was filled with cutting, mixing, measuring, cooking, baking and eating. The children explored the ins and outs of a kitchen all while creating new recipes each week and enjoying the process along the way. Our LEGO Extravaganza creators used a wide variety of Legos to complete tasks and challenges. They had opportunities for collaboration, problem-solving, sorting, designing, creating, and building. Each student embraced their creative side to build outstanding Lego creations. Our spring enrichment classes began this week with "Blooming Art!" and "Potter @ PDS."

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

March has been full of fun and activity! The week before spring break our entire student body joined together in a schoolwide curriculum unit celebrating community. Not only did we learn more about our school and church communities, we also discovered many ways we can help the Baltimore community. We teamed up in classes to create puzzles, connecting our school community and wore our school colors to celebrate the Redeemer spirit. We also created breakfast bags for Beans & Bread, followed by an all school chapel with the church staff. The students were excited to have the SPCA visit, as well as special guests for Brunch Bunch, when we created Redeemer keychains and shared our classrooms, friends, and teachers. After returning from Spring Break, as part of their family style lunch series, second graders prepared eight casseroles to serve families at Our Daily Bread. Their hard work was rewarded by celebrating together during a pizza lunch when they shared they felt more independent, useful, and happy for helping others. Yesterday, we were all excited to kick off baseball season by honoring our home team on opening day. Go O's! This week the Day School has been filled with Easter spirit with parties, egg hunts, and special chapel services.
