Membership and Scouting at Home
These are unprecedented times for our nation, our city and in our Scouting community as well.  As this is an incredibly fluid situation, restrictions may or may not be in place for the month of April. Units should adhere to CDC guidelines, state and local advice for gatherings as well as communicate with their Chartering Organizations to see when Scouting programs will be able to operate normally at these organizations. Family Friends of Scouting

Friends of Scouting is our annual appeal to all Scouting families in which we offer them the opportunity to support the character education and leadership program that they believe so much in. National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)
Please monitor the NYLT page on the council website for further information about when and if the orientation for Summer 2020 NYLT courses will occur. The orientation will not occur on May 3.  For more information, please click here .
Powder Horn 2020
Postponed-this event will not take place in April and May of 2020
Powder Horn is an action-packed, hands-on, six-day course that helps Scouts and Scouters learn how to implement high adventure activities into their troop, crew or ship.

Silver Beaver Award
The Silver Beaver Award is the highest form of recognition that a local council can bestow on a volunteer.  For more information about this award and for a list of past recipients please click here . Nominations must be submitted by 4:30 PM on May 1, 2020. Please submit all Silver Beaver nominations in PDF format by sending them to silverbeaver@shac.org
Eagle Wall at Cockrell Scout Center 
To help honor the accomplishments of the young men who earn the Eagle Scout rank annually, the Sam Houston Area Council maintains a wall with the names of all Eagle Scouts in front of the Cockrell Scout Center. During the 3rd quarter of 2020 the Sam Houston Area Council plans to add the names of the young men who earned their Eagle Scout rank in 2019. Youth Protection Training
Youth Protection Training (YPT) is designed to help keep youth safe from abuse. During YPT, participants learn the Boy Scouts of America’s Youth Protection Guidelines , signs of abuse, and how to report suspected abuse. This course must be completed by all registered leaders, and is highly recommended for parents and other adults working with youth. For more information, please click here .

United Way of Greater Houston's 211 Helpline and THRIVE
2-1-1 Texas/United Way HELPLINE
If you need help finding child care, food stamps, care for an aging parent or a haven from domestic violence, 2-1-1 is the number to call when you don't know who to call. The United Way of Greater Houston's trained HELPLINE specialists are good listeners, blending understanding and expertise to provide information and referrals drawn from a comprehensive database of social services. Annually, the 2-1-1 Texas/United Way HELPLINE answers over 957,600 calls for help. Basic needs, like food, utilities and health care, topped the list of requests last year, followed by rent assistance and help finding shelter. 2-1-1 can also be a needed resource for hurricane season.
Additionally, other resources such as United Way THRIVES's workforce development offerings, financial coaching and education opportunities and financial products and services can be accessed through 2-1-1 Texas/United Way HELPLINE.

Don’t just earn it, Learn it! Scouts ages 11-17 are eligible to participate in our merit badge workshops. Scouts can choose one of two workshops offered each month.
