Winter Camping Safety
As seasons change, there’s a special magic in winter camping—one of the most challenging outdoor adventures. Cold weather, unpredictable conditions, and unique hazards make preparation essential. Staying warm is the key to safety. Remember the C-O-L-D method:
C – Clean: Keep clothing clean and fluffy for best insulation.
O – Overheating: Avoid sweating; layer up or down and stay hydrated (skip energy drinks).
L – Loose Layers: Wear several loose, bright layers to maintain circulation and visibility. Always wear a hat.
D – Dry: Stay dry—wet clothing cools your body quickly. Brush off snow before entering heated areas. For more information, please click here.

Scout Leader Ravi Maini Awarded National Certificate of Merit
Scout leader Ravi Maini stopped to help after discovering a car that had run off the road into a ditch. Grabbing his first aid kit, he went to assist the driver.
He found the man dazed but conscious, still wearing his seat belt with the airbag deployed. Ravi identified himself, checked the driver’s pulse through the window, directed a bystander to call 911, and made sure the area was safe. To prevent further harm, he chose not to force open the damaged door and instead kept the driver calm and monitored his breathing until EMS arrived about 5–7 minutes later.
Ravi’s calm, skilled response exemplifies the values of Scouting America. Congratulations on his reception of the National Certificate of Merit.
