Parshas Bereshis
October 5-6, 2018
Shalom and hello everyone! I hope you are doing well.

Join us this shabbos parshas bereishis for special tefilos marking shabbos mevorchim mar-cheshvan , blessing of the new Jewish month of cheshvan, whose rosh chodesh is Wednesday and Thursday of next week.

Mar means bitter and after celebrating multiple joyous yomim tovim in a row, we “lament” a month devoid of holidays and religious celebrations.

Wow! What amazing second-day yomim tovim at Ohav Sholom!

Thank you to all who made it possible - and incredibly welcoming, engaging and enjoyable for every member of our community, regardless of age or religious affiliation!

And we were PACKED with hundreds of revelers both night and day, dancing in honor of the Torah with great enthusiasm and geshmack. So many visitors from around the world came to OS to taste real simchas mitzvah and true kavod haTorah…

The excitement began to build on the first days of succos as Ohav Sholom reached critical mass with attendance not seen in years. We were filled to capacity b”h even as many shuls on the UWS (large and small) actually closed for the first day yontif - due to lack of participation!

On shemini atzeres and simchas Torah our numbers swelled to overflow capacity (despite ending at 2:00pm!) as discerning and inspired men and women flocked to our shul to dance REAL hakafos - no half hearted shuffling around the bimah a few times here… oy vey! And that’s SIMCHAS TORAH?!!! Not under my watch.

Finally, Ohav Sholom is the most generous and gracious shul, period. A super gala, over the top, absolutely delicious sit-down luncheon for the entire community after simchas Torah davening completed the most perfect day.

For those who left early, you missed beautiful, heartfelt kumzitz singing and drashos by Chananya, Joey Fryman, Cantor Max Adelkop , and much more. Next year in Jerusalem!
It’s hard to believe but this shabbos we are starting the Torah all over again! “In the beginning…” opens sefer Bereishis and the reading of the blueprint of our own Universe .

If there’s a beginning, what was before? If there’s a middle, what’s the end - what comes next?

These are secrets of the Torah, enshrouded in mystery, an enigma within an enigma.

Are we to ponder what transpired before our world or what will become of it at the end?

There are many people fixated on prior worlds, preoccupied with cataclysmic events and end-of-days scenarios, but this isn’t the Jewish way.

Indeed, the Italian Rabbi, Mystic, and Philosopher, Moshe Luzzatto , in his magnum opus, Mesilas Yesharim, writes that to a Jew, this world is key, this world is crucial, and this world should be our sole occupation - to understand G-d and draw closer to Him by recognizing His presence and even bringing nachas , pride and pleasure, to our Creator - through Torah and mitzvah observance, and ethical, moral behavior.

We approach the reading of Genesis then, with a renewed conviction to appreciate and recognize G-d’s myriad gifts to us on planet Earth and to live our best lives - right here, right now!

A big yasher koach to members Dr. Barry and Caryn Pomerantz for sponsoring this week’s gala hot kiddush in honor of Barry’s father’s yahrtzeit, Charles Pomerantz , Gedalya ben Boruch Mordechai, z”l . May his neshama enjoy an aliyah in gan eden! Amen.

It was with great fanfare that Ohav Sholom selected outstanding “ chassanim ” for simchas Torah: Chosson Torah , Rabbi Alan Ciner , and Choson Bereishis , Jeremy Sanders .

These worthy recipients add so much depth and dignity to our shul - with their Torah knowledge, fine middos and exceptional ability to transmit, lead and instruct - with wisdom and humility.

Stay tuned for an upcoming gala shabbos luncheon sponsored by our chassanim to celebrate the honor they richly deserved - and warmly shared, with the entire kehillah over simchas Torah!

Have a wonderful shabbos,

See you in shul!
