In an effort to streamline emergency information to the SPX community, we have an account with the K12 Alert System. These alerts can be for inclement weather, water main breaks, early dismissal, loss of power, event cancellations, etc.

Please CLICK HERE to register to receive these emergency alerts.

If you have returning students, there is a chance your number is already in the system.

If you have multiple children, please register each child. Once seniors graduate, their information is deleted from the system, and the new freshmen class is added.

Suicide Prevention Month

September is suicide prevention month. Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or background. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, in 2020, suicide was the 12th leading cause of death in the United States, with 45,979 having died and 1.20 million people have attempted it. For age ranges 10-14, suicide moves up to the second leading cause of death and is the third leading cause of death for those between the ages of 15-24 (National Institute of Mental Health, 2022).

Suicide Prevention Month is used to shift public perception, spread hope, and share vital information with people affected by suicide. Below are just a few key signs to be aware of and resources to assist you or your child. For more information on warning signs and ways to help, please visit the NAMI and SAMHSA websites.

Key signs that may indicate your child is struggling with thoughts of suicide:

  • Talking about or making plans for suicide.
  • Expressing hopelessness or despair about the future.
  • Withdrawing from social connections or situations. Experiencing significant changes in sleep patterns.
  • Exhibiting uncharacteristic anger, hostility, or irritability. Increased agitation or mood swings.

Being aware and taking these steps can help keep your child safe:

  • Ask directly if your child is thinking about suicide; this won’t increase their risk.
  • Listen without judgment and express your support.
  • Stay with your child or ensure they’re with a trusted person until further help is available.
  • If immediate danger is present, call 911.
  • Call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline to connect with a caring professional.

The Library Board Needs Freshman Parent Reps!

The Library Board, which includes librarians, teachers, administrators, and students, meets three times yearly. The board provides advice and communication from different perspectives of the school community regarding the library's policies, procedures, and initiatives to promote and foster the use of the library's facilities and materials. The first meeting is Tuesday, October 24, after school in the library. We are looking for parents of freshmen. If willing to serve, parents can join meetings virtually. Please email library@spx.org if you are interested in serving and share why.
