The Power of One
During my recent journey to South Africa for the Edmund Rice Education Beyond Borders (EREBB) Symposium, I reflected on a simple but powerful question: What difference can one person make?
This week marks the 30th anniversary of Blessed Edmund Rice's beatification on October 6, 1996. In the early 1800s, Edmund Rice recognized the needs of young people denied educational opportunities and chose to act. What began with one man's commitment became a mission that crossed oceans, transcended cultures, and inspired generations. More than two centuries later, I stood alongside educators from around the world, united by his vision and our shared belief in the dignity and potential of every child.
South Africa offered profound reminders that history is shaped by those who dare to believe the world can be different. Nelson Mandela's courage, Archbishop Desmond Tutu's moral leadership, and the voices of students in Soweto revealed how conviction can become a catalyst for change. Those students challenged an educational system designed to limit their futures, helping ignite a movement that reached far beyond their classrooms and strengthened the struggle against apartheid.
What resonated most deeply was that none of these stories ended with one person. One person's courage inspired others to act. Individual conviction became collective action, and collective action created lasting change.
I returned to Tampa Catholic thinking about the extraordinary potential within our own classrooms. We cannot know how far our students' influence will reach or whose lives they will touch. But we can nurture their faith, encourage their courage, and remind them that their voices and choices matter today.
The power of one is not measured by what we accomplish alone, but by the hope we awaken in others.
May every Crusader recognize the power they have to begin something extraordinary.
Live Jesus in our hearts, FOREVER!
