Remembering 9/11 & Honoring the Lives Lost

Twenty-five years ago, I sat in my office at USF watching the unimaginable unfold. September 11 shattered our sense of normal, revealing both our vulnerability and our extraordinary capacity to care for one another.

Our students know September 11 as history. Education allows them to wrestle with its difficult questions and understand the world they have inherited. But education alone is not enough.

Through our summer reading of The Red Bandanna, Welles Crowther reminds us that when life changes without warning, we rely on what has already been formed within us. His red bandanna became a symbol of a life rooted in faith and love of neighbor.

At Tampa Catholic, our responsibility is to educate for understanding, nurture a faith that sustains us through uncertainty, and practice love so consistently that it becomes simply who we are.

In memory of the lives lost, may the lives we lead reflect the courage, faith, and sacrificial love we remember today.
