Words of Inspiration

5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Phillipians 2: 5-8

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS

Sing Around The Christmas Tree

Friday was a time of celebration at GCES Chapel, a time to "Sing around the Christmas Tree." It's a beloved tradition, complete with a visit from the eighth graders from Cascade Christian Middle School.

Together, the kindergarten kids sang "Away In a Manger," along with the middle schoolers. Our first through third graders recited Luke chapter 2, which tells us about the birth of Jesus. Everyone joined together to sing the "12 Days of Christmas," in festive Grace Christian fashion.

What a special time, getting the older and younger kids together, as we celebrate God's greatest gift to humanity, God the Son, in the form of Jesus- who came to redeem us that we may enjoy eternal life.

Little Buddies/Big Buddies Program

Do you remember a time as a young child when you had an older kid that you admired and wanted to emulate? Perhaps you found it fulfilling to be a big brother or big sister.

Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Knight and fourth grade teacher Mrs. Falco teamed up for their biweekly buddy break. Older 4th grade students are learning to lead our kindergartners, and younger students enjoy an affirming experience with their big buddies. It’s a win-win for these students!

Here are some heartwarming pictures of their time together, guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

3rd Graders Present: Fables In Reader's Theater Style

This was so much fun! To sharpen their reading and speaking skills, the third graders shared fables by performing them in Reader's Theater style. Our office staff were the privileged audience for this special performance.

Vice-Principal Donnelle Todd tells us our students did a tremendous job, using vocal expression and acting out their parts. We'll be keeping our eyes open for these potential drama students of tomorrow.

Extra! Extra! GCES Newspaper

Fifth graders published the December edition of their newspaper. It featured an original comic by fifth grader Rylie, a Christmas joke, a prayer request, their top 10 favorite Christmas songs, fun Christmas activities the kids could do over break, plus feature stories about a star student and a staff member.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

Scenes From Santa vs. Grinch Day

Christmas Spirit Week is underway. Monday was Santa vs. Grinch Day- so far Santa is coming out on top! Perhaps the Grinch's heart grew another three sizes, although he was represented by a pair of snazzy slippers.

Christmas Food Drive

You could describe it as an opportunity to show the love of Christ by helping the needy in Jackson County with food. Our middle and high school banded together to collect non-perishable food items for the Medford Food Project.

On Friday, representatives from MFP stopped by to pick up donations. A big "thank you" to everyone who helped. What a great opportunity to show the love of Christ.

Mock Trial

These are always much fun, and they're a real eye-opener for the students- Miss Frakes facilitated a mock trial for her 7th-8th grade Experience and Enrichment class.

Miss Frakes says, "We modeled our scenario on a real-life murder case from the 1950s. Students split into defense and prosecution teams and worked together to create their arguments. We had a judge, a defendant, several eyewitnesses, and a jury. Our defendant ended up being convicted of murder, but everybody worked hard and had fun!"

A mock trial sharpens the mind as kids develop critical thinking skills in planning arguments for the prosecution and defense. It also provides a fun opportunity for a little bit of drama too.

Chess

To know Mr. Fortier is to know that he is a man of many passions- one of those is chess. Every year, he offers and Experience/Enrichment in which he teaches students the fundamentals and finer points of the game, and gives them a chance to play.

Our camera caught his class in action Friday. We're also looking forward to hearing more about a possible chess tournament in late January.

Gloomy The Cone

If you listen carefully, you will hear him say, "You shall not pass!" When you see, "Gloomy The Cone," he has an important job- letting kids know the weather is too bad, and the middle school park is closed.

Other methods have been tried, but the signs used before would fall over, and this humble cone has done the trick- he's a sturdy guy. Since his arrival, he has been properly adorned, and rumor has it that Gloomy's story will soon to told by students. You read about it here first: the soon-to-be-famous Gloomy The Cone.

HIGH SCHOOL NEWS

Christmas Spirit Week Is Underway

'Twas the week before Christmas! It was a festive beginning to the week, complete with Christmas jammies and hot cocoa. Students and staff were greeted Monday morning by the ASB team, serving hot chocolate and hearty greetings. The above graphic has the details on them days.

Small Group Discussions

Thursday, CCHS took a break from the usual chapel schedule to break into small groups. There were several different offerings covering a variety of different topics, such as leading like Jesus, a prayer group praying using the "ACTS" model, emotional freedom, discerning God's plan, common questions about God, and much more. Our thanks to all the teachers and administrators for facilitating these sessions.

Challenger Challenges

Mr. Walker invited Cascade students down to the gym Wednesday for a challenge. By making a combination of a layup, a free throw and a three-pointer, any student could win a package of Oreo cookies- as much as Walker loves cookies, he does NOT love Oreos.

Pictured here with our esteemed principal is one of our winners, Brady Kleker. Seriously, Mr. Walker, if you have any Oreos you need to get rid of, let us know. We can help.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Thanks to a gritty defense and the scoring of the senior duo Izzy McCauley and Jordynn Jones, the Cascade Christian girls won their 2024-25 season opener against 4A Marshfield. Trailing by four at halftime, the Challengers chipped away at the Pirates and took the lead for good in the fourth quarter. McCauley led Cascade with 18 points, and the guard added six rebounds. Jones added 15 points and led the team in rebounding with nine. Coach Monte Coley says the team’s defense was the key to the win.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Jaren Fronckowiak scored 25 points, hauled down 4 rebounds, and dished out 4 assists, but 4A Marshfield held off a 4th quarter rally by Cascade Christian as the Pirates were 57-51 winners over the Challengers. The game was the first of the season for the defending 3A state champions. Hudson Gotzman scored a varsity career-high 13 points off of the Challenger bench. On the positive side, the new-look Challengers shot 46.5 percent on 20 of 43 shooting from the floor. CCHS will look to clean up their total of 20 turnovers.

Cascade made a competitive run despite the absence of injured junior wing Deryk Farmer. Their next game is set for Dec. 19 at the Seaside Tournament against Madras.

SWIMMING

The Cascade Christian Challengers swim team had their first meet a week ago Saturday at Rogue X, hosted by St. Mary’s. Program representatives tell us this is typically a great first meet for any new swimmers and their first meet. Challenger Swim and Coach Christian Scaglione come away energized for a great season. Cascade Christian’s swim team placed first overall at the Small School relay invitational, beating out Phoenix, Eagle Point, Henley, and St Marys. The Challengers ended with six golds, one silver, and two bronzes. Scaglione is particularly proud of the boys, who swam in ten events each. Last Saturday, the Challengers competed at North Bend, but results were not available yet. Below is a team photo from the North Bend meet.
