So touted Arizona Public Radio during SmallWood 2012: Forest Restoration for a New Economy. Convened by FPS on May 1-3, the conference highlighted solutions for utilizing low-value and waste wood critical to offsetting costs of fuel reduction and forest restoration treatments in the US.

Conference headliners included Butch Blazer, USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Natural Resources and the Environment, who spoke about the need for sound policies for forest restoration. Mr. Blazer was joined in the opening plenary session by Scott Hunt, Arizona State Forestry Division; Mike Williams, Kaibab National Forest; Todd Morgan, University of Montana; and Catherine Mater, Mater Engineering. All noted the economic and environmental opportunities of forest restoration.

Nearly a dozen technical sessions at the conference addressed different aspects of small-diameter timber utilization. Topics included policies and incentives, pretreatment of biomass, specialty and non-traditional forest products, pyrolysis, harvesting, and others. Speaker presentations will be posted to the conference website shortly.

Cross-Laminated Timber Structural and Architectural Possibilities Examined at Recent Webinar

More than 25 people from the US, Canada, and New Zealand recently had a virtual front-row seat for Dr. Marjan Popovski's talk on cross-laminated timber (CLT) technologies, construction practices, and ongoing research activities. CLT is an innovative wood product first developed some 20 years ago in Austria and Germany. It is gaining popularity in Europe and is now available from North American producers.

Dr. Popovski, of FPInnovations, included many examples of projects that utilized CLT components. Participants discussed alternative connection methods, in-service structural monitoring, and the current work toward building codes in North America. This webinar was not recorded, but we hope to build a library of recorded webinars and supporting materials on topics important to our members and the industry at large. We thank the Midwest and Pacific Northwest Sections of the Forest Products Society for producing this engaging program.
