A sneak preview of Forest Products Journal
Special to the Forest Products Journal: An Overview of the Forest Products Sector Downturn in the US - The Facts and Opportunities
Take a sneak preview of four related articles that will be published later this month in our flagship Forest Products Journal. These articles address the various aspects of the recent downturn in output and decrease in employment in the forest products industry.

The extent of the forest industry downturn varies by sector, impacted by structural changes in the overall economy coupled with substantial impacts from the Great Recession. Globalization of manufacturing and expanded use of electronic communication media contributed to a decline in U.S. pulp, paper, and paperboard output since the late 1990s, while the collapse of housing construction since 2006 and off-shoring of furniture production contributed to declines in U.S. wood product output.

The articles point to structural changes that may be difficult to reverse, but also point to some potential prospects for growth in the future such as increased secondary product manufacturing and wood energy.

Welcome to the New Society President

We welcome Patrice R. Tardif, President and CEO of Patrice Tardif Consulting in Canada, to her one-year term as President of the Board of the Forest Products Society.

In her remarks at the International Convention in Washington DC last month, Patrice outlined her goals for the Society to increase its impact. Among these goals, she wants us to become the go-to organization for new sectors needing information regarding wood products and by-products and their use; to take and make opportunities to expand target markets; to invigorate our Society and its activities for the benefit of its members; and to create a one-stop shop for registered green wood products. Patrice also encouraged members to get involved, because volunteers have the opportunity to move this Society forward.

66th International Convention in Washington, DC Exceeded Expectations

Thank you to all who were able to attend our 66th International Convention last month, to those who were responsible for its planning, and to our technical and plenary presenters for providing insights on forest products technology, environmental concerns, and policies for a global green economy. And to our members, thank you for your frank feedback about prior ICs.

This year we instituted some of your new ideas, such as holding two plenary sessions and a keynote luncheon. These allowed deeper discussions on broader topics that crossed segments of the industry. We also tried “Speed Networking,” which was a fun way to have students meet many more professionals by each student having a quick and pointed conversation before moving on to another potential contact. We realize the venue for the Convention was pricey, but it was and important opportunity to raise the Society’s visibility with federal and international policy makers.

Mark your calendar for the 67th IC: June 9-11, 2013 in Austin, Texas.

Dr. Richard P. Vlosky, newly appointed Chair of the 2013 International Convention, gets ready for Austin!

Rich Vlosky is giving us his “spare” time as Director of the Louisiana Forest Products Development Center.

The new Chair of our 67th International Convention, to be held June 9 - 11, 2013 in Austin, Texas, USA, is already strategizing about more ways to give our members and supporters what they want from this annual conference. Save the date. It’s the place to be.

Cutting-edge: Timbergreen Farm's focus on maintaining healthy forests helps the company attract prized bucks
"Family Business of the Year Award winner Jim Birkemeier has turned a little bit of forest into some big green...What they teach you up there is you can never allow the industry demand to dictate what trees you're going to cut down, and that's what we've really screwed up in the past. We've just harvested the trees that the big corporations wanted at the expense of the landowner and the land." Read more
