Seeing country by train interesting but challenging
|
Many of our students traveled with their families over the summer, some even out West. Junior Melissa Buchanan and her parents spent nearly two weeks traveling to several national parks and the West Coast via Amtrak train. It was a memorable trip, not just for the sightseeing but also the experience of modern rail travel.
The trip included scheduled days traveling by train, overnight stays in hotels at their destinations as well as overnight rail travel, and excursions at each destination. Melissa said she enjoyed seeing the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Park, especially the geothermic sites at the latter.

Our first Sports Spotlight of the 2022-2023 school year is on Girls Golf. Coach Jennifer McCallister ’11 nominated senior Savanna Gohmann and junior Claire Cassis for this issue’s spotlight because “they are both veteran varsity players who are our returning number two and number one, respectively. They have shown dedication to this team, and I am excited to watch them lead the team this year and watch them flourish both on and off the golf course.”

Faith, service important to Pioneer teams
|
|
While our sports teams train and practice to be competitive on the field, court, or course, they also value prayer and service. Many of our teams do service projects together, including the Volleyball team. The team volunteered for a day to help at St. Elizabeth Catholic Charities this summer. The team also has committed to continue that service throughout the year by taking turns maintaining a section of the agency’s campus with two members of the team and their families going every other week.
Many teams also conduct a season opening ceremony or pray together before games. The Girls Soccer Jersey Ceremony is an annual tradition in which players are officially welcomed to the team and Girls Soccer family. The coaches present the players their uniforms in a gathering of the players’ friends and loved ones. Father Dan Atkins ’66, our chaplain coordinator, blessed the jerseys and said a short prayer of protection and success for the players as they prepared for their season at the most recent ceremony.
“While this is a great time of celebration, it is also a time to reflect on faith, family, and looking towards the future,” Coach Trevor Black said.

Former Boys Basketball coach Phil Schroer passes away
|
|
Former Boys Basketball coach and guidance counselor Phil Schroer (1977-1983) passed away suddenly last week in Albuquerque, N.M., having previously retired from the city’s Cibola High School as athletic director. According to A Pioneering Spirit, Schroer had wanted to coach at Providence since seeing the team in its 82-83 loss to eventual state runner-up Floyd Central in 1971.
Schroer was considered for the coaching job after Bob Fields (Hon. ’93) left coaching to lead the athletic department in 1975, but there was no opening to teach in his certification area of health and P.E. Two years later, he was asked to lead the Pioneers and left Corydon to also serve as guidance counselor here, requiring him to pursue his guidance counseling certification.
Schroer started with a young team and rebuilt the program to a winning record the last four of his six seasons, prepping the team that eventually became the 1984 sectional champs the year following his departure to coach at Las Vegas Robertson High School. From there, he went on to coach and become AD at Cibola.
Schroer was a Seymour native who played basketball and baseball at New Mexico Highlands University and was a member of the college’s 1967 NAIA national championship baseball team. He was a member of the athletic hall of fame at Seymour and at Cibola.

Mr. Fields happy to receive Pioneer swag
|
|
Retired Athletic Director Mickey Golembeski had a chance to visit with retired Athletic Director and coach Bob Fields (Hon. ’93) at his home in St. Louis, taking him some mementos from the recent Boys Basketball state championship. Even in his retirement, Mr. Fields remains a dedicated Pioneer fan and was pleased to receive the gifts.
Mr. Golembeski said that Mr. Fields is doing well and looking forward to this 81st birthday in November. Mr. Fields walks daily to stay fit and maintain his stamina. He lives in an assisted living facility near his nephews, who provide care for his needs.
“In talking to a few residents, and the facility’s manager, they all know Bob and call him Coach,” Mr. Golembeski said. “He’s a big helper to the facility whenever he can…just like at PHS.”

Prayer for the Assumption of Mary
|
Father in heaven,
all creation rightly gives you praise,
for all life and all holiness come from you.
In the plan of your wisdom
she who bore the Christ in her womb
was raised body and soul in glory to be with him in heaven.
May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness
and join in her hymn of endless love and praise.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
