GOOD SHEPHERD EPISCOPAL CHURCH

The Last Sunday after the Epiphany

February 11, 2024

We will be celebrating with Transfiguration Church (via Zoom) at 9:00 am, and in person at Good Shepherd Church 10:30 am.

We are a people who hear the Good Shepherd's voice.

We know by faith that we belong to God.

We are called to seek and love our neighbors as God loves us!

Would you like to explore ways to deepen your faith during Lent?

Bring your questions, your doubts, and your yearnings to a discussion group on deepening our faith. We will look to the life of St. Peter to help guide our discussion. He was imperfect and he made LOTS of mistakes, but he loved Jesus and did his utmost to follow him. Our sessions will take place on Zoom on Thursdays during Lent, from February 15 through March 21 from 7 PM to 8 PM. If you’d like to know more, please email Deacon Linda Mahler at [email protected] .

The Lenten Study Group this year will be discussing ministry with a part-time Rector, led by Shaun Hardy and Liz Cocke. The Zoom discussions will be for five Tuesday evenings Feb 20-March 19, 7-8:30, including portions of the book “Part-time is Plenty: Thriving Without Full-time Clergy," available from Amazon; some short articles and one or more YouTube videos. You can sign up in the Narthex, or send a text or email to Liz or Shaun, along with any questions. You’ll receive links to the short articles, YouTube videos, meeting reminders and the Zoom link for the meetings. We look forward to sharing with each other and developing ideas as we move forward in our parish life with a part-time Rector.

Mark your calendars! Our annual meeting is February 25th after service, along with an amazing Black History Month Luncheon (Thank you Florence!). We look forward to seeing everyone there.

SOCIAL OUTREACH

EPPN Action Alerts

Abolish the Death Penalty While most death row inmates in the U.S. reside in state prisons, there are still 44 people on federal death row. President Biden issued a federal moratorium on the use of the death penalty in 2021. However, without legislation, this decision could easily be reversed.

Expand the Child Tax Credit Begun in 1997, this credit expired in 2022 without Congressional action. Since, child poverty has doubled, and at the end of 2022, it was recorded at over 12%. There is a chance now for Congress to act on this issue. Please reach out to your members of Congress today and encourage they act now on this important issue.

Vote Faithfully 2024 Election Engagement Toolkit! It’s finally here! Help your congregation help your community engage in the 2024 U.S. election.

For any questions please call Lynette Clark at 301-357-1726 or email at [email protected]

Episco-Pols Podcast Season 2 We continue releasing episodes this season every other week focusing in part on existing resolutions of the church to help guide Episcopalians ahead of 2024 General Convention in Louisville.

American Friends of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem (AFEDJ) - Your help is needed more than ever in the Holy Land. The United States, along with several ally countries, has made the decision to withhold funding from UNWRA (the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees) because of the alleged involvement of 13 (out of 13,000) UNWRA employees in the horrific October 7 attack on civilians in Israel. These 13 UNWRA employees have been removed from their jobs during the investigation. UNWRA is the primary supplier of humanitarian support including healthcare, education, and food relief to the Palestinians in Gaza. The AFEDJ's support of the Ahli Arab (Anglican) Hospital in northern Gaza is more essential than ever as are all our prayers and other efforts made toward Peace and Justice in the Holy Land. Innocent civilians are in danger of hunger, even starvation, a severe crisis of healthcare, and a total absence of education for their children, not to mention death, severe wounds, and no place to lay their heads. Once again, let us work and pray for peace.

As a nonsectarian, nonpolitical 501(c)(3) nonprofit, AFEDJ does not engage in explicitly political activities. AFEDJ offers a resource list on our website of organizations that offer the opportunity to advocate on behalf of vulnerable and displaced people in the Middle East. You may find it here: https://afedj.org/resources/advocacy-organizations/
