FROM PETER'S PEN
On Saturday, January 29, we held our annual vestry retreat. We spent six hours worshiping, completing our Mutual Ministry Review (a guided review of the past 12 months), planning for 2022, and getting to know each other a little better. Joining us was The Rev. Canon Amy Chambers Cortwright. As Canon to the Ordinary, she is the senior priest who works directly for Bishop Mark.
Senior Warden Julia Tyson ably led the opening exercise, Two Truths and a Lie, which had us roaring with laughter and quickly feeling like we were old acquaintances.
Canon Amy led us through a thorough and excellent review of parish activities. We looked at our goals for 2021 and honestly asked ourselves if we met these goals. The short answer is yes. We were focused on continuing to provide the best worship and community outreach possible, both in-person and online, as well as growing our worship attendance. We examined things that could have been done differently or better, and we began making solid plans for 2022. We offer our thanks to Canon Amy for her excellent leadership.
I led the portion of the retreat that focused on planning for 2022. The new vestry and I began mapping out our work for the year. Some of the work this year will involve consulting with both the Episcopal Church marketing program known as Invite, Welcome, Connect and with a local marketing firm to implement the growing out into our community that I talked about on Sunday morning. More information on this will be made available in the near future.
We continue to assess and prioritize maintenance on our beautiful, historic church. We are looking at several projects for this year. More information will be available soon on this as well. We also plan to add a vestry column to the newsletter so that you have an idea of what your vestry is thinking and what projects they are tackling.
I encourage you to keep your vestry and your clergy leadership in daily prayer. There are some really excellent people on this year's vestry, and they are already working hard to guide us in making our parish an even more healthy and Spirit-filled community!
With Joy,
Peter +

P.P.S. I checked in with David Sellwood at Stewart Home School today to see about the students returning to worship at Ascension and also about us visiting them. Here is David's response:
"Thank you so much for checking on us. It means the world to us. We are praying that we will get to come back to church soon; however, we have 12 positive COVID cases this weekend. We did campus-wide testing today. It will be a couple of months before we can get back to off-campus church. I apologize, but at this time we are not accepting any off-campus visitors."

Saager Appointed Director of Camp H.O.P.E.

“If you want something done, give it to a busy person.” This old adage has been attributed to Benjamin Franklin and others. It’s not the busy-ness itself that makes a person a good choice for a task; it is usually that being busy is a trait of a “do-er” – someone who gets things done.
At Ascension, one busy do-er is The Rev. Deacon Rebecca Saager, our Curate and Reading Camp Director for almost ten years. Many who know her infectious smile also know that she is a multi-tasking organizer who gets things done. Her work as a youth counselor at the Cathedral Domain during church camp season led to her recent appointment as Director of Camp H.O.P.E.
