Volume 12, Issue #7
February 17, 2022

In the name of Christ, we embrace all people to be nourished and empowered by the Holy Spirit to love and serve the world.
FROM PETER'S PEN

For the next two weeks, our midweek worship service on Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. will include readings from the Book of James. James is located near the end of the New Testament and is filled with practical wisdom from early Christians. It focuses on how to build and sustain a Christian community and incorporates unexpected humor and irony. James is one of my favorite parts of the Bible.

Chapter Three, Verse Sixteen, is especially worth mentioning:
"Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with humility born of wisdom."

There are several words here worth studying, and we will focus on humility. In James, humility means gentleness or mildness. James teaches that humility is an important part of the Christian's everyday life. Thus, God's wisdom builds in us gentleness or mildness.

This often flies in the face of our culture in which are taught to be outspoken and to insist on getting what we want. There is a time for outspokenness or insistence, but it is not to be a Christian's default setting. James (and Jesus, on many occasions) teaches that before anything else we are Christians and citizens of God's Kingdom. Our allegiance to God comes before allegiance to culture. It is healthy for us to read James and to compare his words against the way we live our lives.

Are we living as Christians first? Or as individuals first and Christians as a distant second?

PROJECT LINUS
One of our members, who crafts beautiful blankets and quilts, asked me to include a note in our newsletter about Project Linus. This wonderful ministry makes handmade blankets for hurting children. A number of the blankets and quilts that they make go to hospital neonatal (newborn baby) units and even to our own Simon House. It is a really wonderful ministry. If you find yourself with time and a desire to help children and families, please contact Lisa Kepf, Coordinator of the Central KY Chapter of the Linus Project, at (859) 552-5905 or pilkepf@gmail.com
