Volume 9, Issue #10 - March 14, 2019

In the name of Christ, we embrace all people to be nourished and empowered by the Holy Spirit to love and serve the world.
As we are now into the first week in Lent, you will already note that things are not ordinary in the church. Among the several obvious changes are that the metal crosses are veiled, the hangings are violet, the Eucharistic vessels are earthenware, and the "alleluias" are suspended.

In addition to these seasonal shifts, our priests will celebrate at the high altar facing the east (ad orientem) , as was done throughout medieval times up through the latter part of the 20th Century. (The free-standing altar will stand fast and not be moved about.) Celebrating ad orientem emphasizes the transcendent mystery of God, with all facing eastward in anticipation of and preparation for the celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord.

As mentioned in last Sunday's sermon, one helpful discipline for this Lenten preparation comes from the venerable Saint Augustine’s Prayer Book, first published by the Order of the Holy Cross in the late 1940s. The Examination of Conscience is found i nside this devotional treasure ; we have put it on our church web site at this link: Examination of Conscience . I invite you to make use of this wonderful resource.

This is only one example of Lenten discipline; if you have questions about these or any other disciplines, please don’t hesitate to contact me or one of the other clergy.

The Ordination of Sue Kurtz
to the diaconate will be held at Ascension on Sunday, March 24, at 5:00 p.m. This diocese-wide event will be followed by a catered reception in the parish hall. YOU are invited to share in this very special experience with Sue.

REMINDER: Contact Judith Spencer if you plan to attend - email jspencer254@yahoo.com .

Also, remember that we are receiving donations for Sue to help defray the related costs she will incur for special vestments, communion kit, etc. If you wish to participate in this traditional form of support for the newly ordained, please make your check payable to Church of the Ascension and in the Memo section write "Kurtz Ordination." Thank you for your prayerful consideration as we prepare for this most joyful occasion.

"Holy Cow!" Survey:

Ascension parishioners are invited to complete the Church Assessment Tool (CAT) from Holy Cow! Consulting; this survey is an on-line instrument that will help our leaders gauge the strength, vitality, and trends in our church. The information gained from this assessment will be valuable in helping the Vestry as we make decisions about the future of the Church of the Ascension.

Parishioners should have already received an email with a unique link to the Church Assessment Tool (CAT). If you need a paper copy, please come to the office; we will provide one for you along with a self-addressed stamped return envelope.

All answers are strictly anonymous. We have no way of matching a ny assessment to a particular person, so please feel free to candidly share your perceptions, opinions and experiences. Our future together is dependent on your participation and honest answers.
