Volume 9, Issue #39 - October 10, 2019

In the name of Christ, we embrace all people to be nourished and empowered by the Holy Spirit to love and serve the world.

Here at Ascension, we have a number of great people doing exciting things for the Kingdom of God in our community. You will start to see a wider range of articles in our e-weekly news, allowing all of us to learn about their work and, as you are led, explore new paths for your own spirituality. 🙂

This Saturday is Capital Pride and, since it takes place a block from our front door, it's a great opportunity for us to engage and build relationships with our wider community. It was not all that long ago that the Episcopal Church was not a welcoming place for our LGBTQ + sisters and brothers. Fortunately much of that has changed in the past 20 - 30 years and today we are a community that actively listens for God's voice, and seeks transformation and renewal from God's Spirit.

Over the next few days, I encourage you to be in prayer: for the many people who will attend Capital Pride, for the members of Ascension who will represent us at the church's Pride booth, and that God will continue to transform us into a safe and welcoming community for all who are refugees from hate and discrimination. I also encourage you to give thanks: Ascension is a beautiful and amazing community where much good happens. It is a joy to be a part of this great congregation!

Sunday, October 20, 8:00 & 10:30

This is a real-time worship teaching/commentary explaining various elements of the service. This time we will cover the Service of the Word. If you sometimes wonder why we do what we do, or if you know someone who would like to learn, this is definitely a service to attend!

Sunday, October 27, 8:00 & 10:30

Bishop Van Koevering will make his official annual visit to Ascension, attending both the 8:00 and 10:30 services as well as the Preacher’s Forum and Coffee Hour. He will administer the rites of Confirmation and/or Reception to presented candidates. The undesignated plate offering on the occasion of the Bishop’s visit customarily goes to the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund; this year, Bishop Mark will donate 100% of these offerings to the Diocesan Reading Camp.
