Students tour watercolor exhibit at museum

Sixth grade art classes from the Poplar Bluff Middle School had an opportunity to view nationally renowned watercolor art on Friday, Jan. 8, at the Margaret Harwell Art Museum.

MHAM Director Steve Whitworth, who invited the district, noted that this is the first time the biennial exhibit has been hosted in the same location consecutively, having first been featured here in 2018.

"This is a tremendous event, with high-quality water media, created by top artists from coast to coach, border to border," Whitworth states in the exhibit program. "To be able to see the original work in person, up close, is a rare treat for the aficionado, and a great learning opportunity for fellow artists."

The Watercolor USA Exhibition features around 60 original pieces from artists across America and serves as a qualifier for selection in the permanent collection of the Springfield Art Museum, sponsored by the Watercolor Honor Society. Later this month, groups of students from the High School and Junior High will also get a chance to view the watermedia paintings.

"It's a unique opportunity for the kids to see a broad spectrum of art," commented art teacher Kelly Lawson. Her colleague Stephanie Link of the Middle School noted how time-consuming the medium could be considering how many layers of paint are needed for such high-level work.

The traveling exhibit will be on display for free through Sunday, Jan. 24, thanks in part to grant funding provided by the Missouri Arts Council. The MHAM, located at 421 N. Main St., is open to the public from noon-4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Sterling Bank purchases 100 tickets to support Mules MSHOF induction

Sterling Bank has purchased 100 tickets to support the Poplar Bluff High School Mules Golf program's induction into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, the not-for-profit organization announced on its website last week.

"We are delighted to welcome Sterling Bank aboard as an associate sponsor," MSHOF Executive Director Jerald Andrews stated in the press release. "Sterling Bank's generosity will certainly help us make it a memorable day for Poplar Bluff's golfers."

A member of the Class of 2021, Mules Golf will be the first male program in Missouri to be inducted on Sunday, Jan. 31, in Springfield. The boys golf program will join former Mules Football players Eddie Moss and Derland Moore as MSHOF inductees who are PBHS alumni.

"This honor is a great thing for our community to enjoy as a historical achievement," said Scott E. Spencer, president and chief executive officer of Sterling Bank. "The players, coaches and parents make up the true fabric of what Poplar Bluff is all about. This recognition has been a journey for many generations."

According to Spencer, the Poplar Bluff-headquartered bank has numerous employees, shareholders, customers and friends who are current or former Mules golfers, and they have supported the program for decades, supplying the team with golf bags, shirts and other needs expressed by coach Billy Pyland and his predecessor, Bill Caputo.

Pyland thanked Sterling Bank for the constant support, along with the entire banking sector, as well as other businesses and individuals in the community who have sponsored meals, transportation and even practice locations over the years.

"It's basically been 24 years of asking for various things and not being turned down," said Pyland, who was named Poplar Bluff's 2020 secondary grade-span Teacher of the Year.

Mules Golf has earned six state championships, was named runners-up five times and owns the most top-four finishes of all public schools in Missouri. Individual state champions have included Craig Caringer, Brent Pennington, Colby Robertson twice, and Tyler Hillis.

Oak Grove students learn about five biomes

Oak Grove Elementary second graders showcased their Christmas break projects last week in Whitney Conover's class, depicting their favorite biome in the form of a 3D model or drawing.

For weeks prior to vacation, students learned about the five major types of biomes-aquatic, desert, forest, grassland and tundra-and then selected one to recreate using supplies from home. A biome is a large community of vegetation and wildlife adapted to a specific climate, according to the National Geographic Society.

"This is my second year teaching, but last year I had my students do this project over spring break and we never returned, so we didn't get to show them off like we did this year," explained Conover, noting: "My students were so excited and loved doing this."
