Life Skills class opens jewelry business

A new jewelry line designed by students is becoming a fashion trend among Poplar Bluff Middle School staff.

Treasured Trinkets, a craft business launched to help Life Skills students develop fine motor skills, was introduced to the school community last month during Open House.

"We're having students try new skills so they can learn to [one day] be independent," explained Shalyn Copas, teacher of the fifth and sixth grade class. "They're asking for help, building grit, [exerting] the appropriate effort when challenged, working at a reasonable pace and they're leaving here knowing how to make the stuff, which is also neat."

Students rotate stations in small groups on Fridays, and school employees are invited to stop by the classroom to place custom orders of earrings, bracelets and necklaces. A register is set up for students to practice making change, and the class assists with inventory after reviewing sales. So far over 50 pieces have been sold.

The class helped create the logo for the business, selecting the desired font. Staff members were asked to submit business name suggestions. Teacher Julia Dragon is credited for coming up with the final choice and was rewarded with a free necklace for her participation.

The proceeds from the store after purchasing the necessary supplies will go toward a field trip. Last year students studied world geography and then visited the Lazy L Safari Park north of Cape Girardeau to learn about the countries from which the various animals in the petting zoo originated.

In years past, the functional activity of the Life Skills class involved a drink and snack cart that students used to make deliveries throughout the building. This summer Copas decided she wanted to come up with a "non-food related" activity that went beyond teaching social skills, she said.

Students take industrial tour during MFG Day

Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center and Graduation Center students participated in Manufacturing Day on Thursday, Oct. 3, and were provided the opportunity to tour factories in Industrial Park.

An annual tradition for regional schools in cooperation with the National Association of Manufacturers, engineers from local factories-including Starting USA Corporation (SUSA) and Briggs & Stratton-discussed their assembly lines and job opportunities with students.

"Everyone has a different type of skill, whether it's leadership - dealing with people, or feet on the floor - from electricians to machinists," said SUSA Plant Manager Charlie Fortner during the second leg of the tour. "One thing you'll find out in life is the more education you can get, you'll be able to kick open some doors."

SUSA offers 100 percent tuition reimbursement for approved specialty courses, Fortner reported. Some of the positions require college degrees while others demand technical training. The Poplar Bluff plant spends $8 million locally on materials and has a payroll of $3.7 million, employing 130 people year-round, the plant manager stated.

A joint venture between Starting Industrial Japan and Briggs & Stratton Corporation, SUSA has produced over 250 million engine recoil starters since 1994, primarily for power equipment at the neighboring small engine plant as well as for Honda and Kawasaki mufflers made in the Carolinas, according to Fortner.

"We need doctors, lawyers and teachers, but we also need industry people, so I'm glad to hear you're starting to think about technical degrees," said Brent Wlodarcik, SUSA engineering manager. "We don't have these other professions if we don't have the infrastructure where our economy is strong, and we need young people to take the reins."

Wlodarcik advised students that "your attitude determines your direction," adding "there are no boundaries." Having worked in the industrial sector for 16 years, Wlodarcik received his bachelor's degree from William Woods University in Fulton upon transferring from Three Rivers College. Over lunch, students received a demonstration of equipment utilized in the career technical studies program at the Poplar Bluff community college.

Michael Barrett, who is the TCC instructor over computer science, said he was most impressed with the automation that takes place at Briggs & Stratton, and quizzed his students on what aspects of the operation are reliant on coding and programming, including the software that tracks production down to the individual operator throughout the day. The computer maintenance class led by instructor Tony Kirkley also joined in the Industrial Park visit.

All-District Choir features 16 PBHS students

A total of 16 Poplar Bluff High School music students were named to the All-District Choir on Saturday, Sept. 28, during a regional audition in Cape Girardeau.

At the audition, each student prepared and performed an art song before a panel of judges and sight-read, which involves singing a piece of music that the high schooler has not seen before, requiring a "high level of musicianship," reported Joshua Allen, PBHS director of vocal music.

The 9th and 10th grade All-District Choir will include Emma Harris in the soprano section; Lexy Rowland and Emma Tinsley as altos; Bralin Duckett, Brent Hanley, Christian Redding and Isaac Reid as tenors; and Dawson Vaughan in bass. The 11th and 12th grade All-District Choir will include Kerrigan Moore and Lauren Robertson as sopranos; Eva Bedell and Allison Knowlton as altos; Ross Dare and Jayvon Holloway-Allen as tenors; and Michael Joseph and Aaron Taylor in the bass section.

The All-District concert is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Cape Central High School.
