Pavilion, walking track added to PBMS campus through partnership

A pavilion has recently been constructed in front of the Middle School, connected to an ADA-compliant walking track installed last school year so that students can have expanded recreational space for recess.

The Parent Teacher Organization is responsible for financing the bulk of the project through fundraising efforts over the past few years, mostly from student-led candy bar sales, while the PBHS Class of 1972 made a substantial donation toward its completion.

"It's been a coordinated effort to enhance safety and accessibility for our students, and the group continues to look at other options to be made available to our kids through this wonderful partnership," said Dr. Amy Jackson, assistant superintendent of business. "We appreciate the lasting contributions to the Poplar Bluff Middle School."

The Middle School has a separate enclosed, outdoor playground, but the concrete surface makes it best suited for basketball, according to Principal Dr. Josh Teeter. The fenced-in green space out front will allow students to run around, he said. Previously they were walking to the nearby Kiwanis Bacon Memorial Park for special activities.

Future plans include replacing the soccer goals, according to PTO members Kera Hoffman and Candis Maurer, who are credited for initiating the project and seeing it through until the end. The acreage formerly served as Strenfel Field before the Middle School and the High School swapped locations in 2016.

"This is our old high school baseball field, so it was the perfect opportunity for us to get behind," said alumnus Rick Berry, on behalf of the Class of 1972. Berry reached out to Jackson, who brought the project to his attention. R-I Maintenance Supervisor Colt Sievers led the effort to save the district thousands of dollars with purchasing power and in-kind labor.

Jingle Jog raises almost 1,000 canned goods for Bread Shed

Oak Grove held its 16th annual Jingle Jog on Thursday. Dec. 17, generating nearly 1,000 canned food items for the Bread Shed, while teaching elementary students the value of goal setting.

During the Jingle Jog, students collectively attempt to run a lap per non-perishable, having worked up to it prior in gym class. The event kicked off with a parade, and staff members dressed as Christmas characters for the occasion. Afterward, students warmed up with hot cocoa and cookies.

"Students have been working on a five-minute jog in their PE class," stated Oak Grove Principal Jenifer Richardson in a letter to parents. "The total number of class laps run previously with Coach [Pat] Carda will determine the class goal for the number of laps their class will run/walk, and the number of food items their class will try to bring for the food drive."

Participating in the opening ceremonies was River Radio, the High School JROTC, Junior High Life Skills class; Technical Career Center; Chartwells; Three Rivers College Rodeo Team; Missouri Department of Conservation; Poplar Bluff Ranger District with special guest Smokey Bear; Poplar Bluff Police Department; and the Poplar Bluff Fire Department, which transported Santa Claus.

Kindergartners donate stuffed animals, blankets to first responders

The Poplar Bluff Kindergarten Center has donated new and gently used stuffed animals and blankets to various agencies in the county to be used by first responders to comfort children in emergency situations.

The "Beary Love" fundraising effort was part of a school-wide mission rolled out this month called Caring Kinder Mules through which students participate in service projects in order to give back to the community.

"As kids, sometimes they don't get to take part [in charity], but even if they're little, they can still find a way to give back," explained Jessica Thurston, Kindergarten principal. "We give what we can."

Emergency personnel receiving several boxes of items apiece, coordinated with help from vision screener Marsha McKuin, included: the Butler County Sheriff's Office, Fire Department and EMS; and the Poplar Bluff Police and Fire departments. Next month's mission will be to write letters and make cards for residents of area nursing homes who may not get to see their families often, Thurston noted.

"The community has been so good in taking care of us, we just wanted to find a way to do our part," the principal continued. "It goes along with our Capturing Kids' Hearts [initiative], and really our mission as a district."
