Lake Road honored nationally for MAP scores

For the second year in a row, Poplar Bluff R-I has had an elementary school receive national recognition for exceptional student achievement on the MAP test.

Lake Road Elementary was one of only two Missouri schools to be named a National ESEA Distinguished School out of 68 educational institutions nationwide during the program's annual conference held Wednesday through Saturday, Jan. 30-Feb. 2, in Kansas City.

"We were known as that school, the school of low academic performance, poor attendance and bad behavior," said Lake Road Principal Erica Weadon in her acceptance speech. "There are many things that helped get us where we are today, but I feel extreme hard work, dedication and a growth mindset by all staff has transformed our school."

Along with Grovespring Elementary School south of Lebanon, which was selected for closing achievement gaps between subgroups, Lake Road was nominated by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for maintaining excellent student performance for consecutive years.

Students scored 75.4 proficient or advanced in math and 78.9 in English language arts on the 2018 Missouri Assessment Program exam, and 75 in math and a full 100 in ELA the year prior.

Faculty members attribute the student success to data-driven instruction, using curriculum based measurements for reading in order to progress monitor and creating common formative assessments in math to determine whether individuals are learning the standards at the required level.

"If [students] don't do well, it's not them, it's a check for me so I know what to teach better," explained Abbey French, one of two intervention teachers at Lake Road. French and her colleagues co-teach, rotating groups of students for one hour each day in every classroom.

"The big buzz word in education is teaching for 'All,' and all has a capital letter L," added Martha Henry, a special education teacher. "I think we are so there."

The National Association of ESEA State Program Administrators established the award in 1996 to highlight schools with economically disadvantaged populations that are successfully using resources available under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to improve the education for the entire student body.

Last year, Oak Grove received the prestigious honor for averaging a 24 percent improvement rate among subgroups, according to a DESE official. The annual event was formerly known as the Distinguished Title I conference hosted for schools that qualify to receive federal funding.

PBJHS teacher earns state award from VFW

An American history teacher at Junior High received a statewide honor through the VFW Citizenship Education program for her efforts co-teaching the 'I'm A Citizen, Too' summer enrichment class.

Only the second Poplar Bluff teacher to reach the state level of the annual program in district history, Kathy Pattillo won the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher award for the middle school grade-span in Missouri on Saturday, Feb. 2, in Jefferson City.

"She has a passion for teaching, a love for children and an unquenchable spirit that represents the qualities of the ideal VFW Teacher of the Year," wrote former R-I educator Jan Desgranges in the nomination letter for her daughter, Pattillo. "Believing in her students, she teaches American government with her heart and strong passion at the Poplar Bluff Junior High."

Desgranges, who founded 'I'm A Citizen, Too' about 30 years ago, was the district's previous statewide award winner around the year she retired in 2008. While Desgranges continues to lead the summer school class, Pattillo has assisted for five years, with plans to take it over once her mother passes the baton.

"I made that promise to Mrs. D," Pattillo stated. "It's a passion of mine. It's also my mom's legacy."

The program teaches students, grades 5-8, what it means to be productive citizens to one's family, community, state and nation. Students who are recruited to participate, around 50 each June, learn about the environment through the Mingo National Wildlife Refuge; marketing from the Chamber of Commerce; tour the police and sheriff departments; conduct a mock city council meeting; participate in a mock trial at the county courthouse; and are taught how a bill becomes a law by state legislators.

The students take a field trip to either the Capitol or perform a patriotic program at a Springfield Cardinals game. One of Pattillo's favorite parts of the itinerary, an assembly is hosted for area veterans and students visit the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center.

When Pattillo's four grown children were younger, she recalls them participating on a float constructed by the class in the city's Fourth of July parade. As a child herself, she said she can remember placing flags on the gravestones of her veteran family members every Memorial Day.

"Growing up in my home, you knew how blessed you were to be an American," Pattillo said. "By the time I was 12, I knew the preamble."

Pattillo was recognized at a banquet hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary alongside a teacher at Truman Elementary in Rolla and another top educator at Pattonville High School in Maryland Heights.

The previous weekend, JROTC instructor Command Sgt. Maj. Marc Roderick of PBHS was also honored on the regional level of the program as the secondary Teacher of the Year by VFW District 15 in Cape Girardeau. Both Pattillo and Roderick received their initial awards from local Post 6477 in December.

"His zeal for our nation is infectious and permeates his classes," wrote Roderick's superior Maj. Gregory Crites in a nomination letter. "It is truly gratifying to see 'Gen Z' students transformed into cadets who understand and appreciate why our nation is so special."

Bonus: Thanks to our faith-based partners

Above: Ten leaders from the pastoral community representing various churches in Poplar Bluff visited the Administrative Building on Friday, Feb. 8, to conduct their weekly Men's Prayer Group session on location. District staff members were invited to participate.

Fun Fact: On his very first day on the job when Dr. Scott Dill took the helm as superintendent of schools in 2016, the Men's Prayer Group of Northpoint Nazarene Church was the initial stop Dill made on his listening tour with community leaders.
