Mrs. Clark named Outstanding Woman in Ag

PBHS agriculture teacher Kathryn Clark received the Outstanding Woman in Ag award on Friday, Jan. 31, during the third annual farmer appreciation luncheon, sponsored by the University of Missouri Extension and the Chamber of Commerce, prior to the Ag Expo at the Black River Coliseum.

"Kathryn has helped her students to accomplish many different things during her 10 years of teaching high school agriculture, including winning a national dairy judging contest, state FFA officer, American FFA degree recipients, many district FFA career development event titles, and growing the Poplar Bluff agriculture program," stated Juan Cabrera-Garcia, horticulturist with Extension. "...Kathryn stays busy with her job wearing many hats to be able to grow a successful agriculture program including helping run the FFA organization, running a school greenhouse, being a PBRI school district ambassador, working to connect our agriculture program to the community, and serving on different committees and offices for the Missouri Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association."

Clark said she would not have been able to enjoy such successes without her co-teacher Dean Lackey, the support of her school colleagues and family. The daughter of farmer Russell Savat, Clark is married to Alex, who is a row cropper south of town. Together they are raising two sons, Luke and Max.

Each year the Poplar Bluff FFA operates a booth at the Ag Expo, and helps host the cattle milking and FFA tractor driving contests.

Early Childhood Center meets the Raiders

The Three Rivers College Raiders Baseball team visited the Early Childhood Center on Thursday, Jan. 30, to interact with students during recess as part of the program's community outreach.

The team has been visiting the school district for about 20 years, according to longtime head coach Stacey Burkey. "We do it for encouragement, to be a positive influence and to give the kids a good day," Burkey said.

The students often talk about the visit in their classroom for days afterward, according to Burkey's wife Sharon, who is employed as a speech pathologist at Early Childhood, and has been instrumental in arranging the visit each year.

"I heard one child say 'that was awesome' as he was coming in from the playground. Another little girl said, 'I love them,'" Sharon Burkey reported. "Right now, I'm hearing them telling their parents all about how those 'big boys' played with them on the playground."

The Raiders begin their baseball season on Friday, Feb. 7, against Muskegon Community College.

Flat Stanley travels the globe

Middle School students recently participated in the Flat Stanley project in English language arts class, sending the paper cutout on a roundtrip over 42,000 miles across the globe.

Flat Stanley traveled coast to coast in the United States, and fourth grader Tyson Roehrs mailed his cutout internationally as far as Spain. Flat Stanley was returned with pictures, including one in a cockpit of a plane, and trinkets such as a Declaration of Independence souvenir from Pennsylvania, teacher Lea Essman reported. Middle School secretary Nancy McCart noted that she enjoyed seeing all the letters coming through the front office from various states.

"I wanted to show them there's more out there than this corner of the world," said Essman, a first year teacher in Poplar Bluff. "I was surprised by how many people already knew about [Flat Stanley]."

Based on the Jeff Brown book, "Flat Stanley" began as an educational project in the mid-1990s by a Canadian elementary teacher.
