TCC partners with Scouts to explore trades
The Boy Scouts of America has partnered with the school district to provide students a hands-on opportunity to explore programs offered at the Technical Career Center that they may later be interested in pursuing.
"Students, along with their parents, explore local careers and learn about the educational opportunities we have to offer," explained Charles Kinsey, TCC director. "We plan to work through every program, which is 11 in total."
The Exploring Club visited the TCC cosmetology program on Tuesday, March 12, and TCC students under the instruction of Susan Chronister shared tips about styling hair, painting nails and applying makeup.
Beginning in January, over 40 club members participated in the initial tour of the building trades program hosted by instructor Jody Cochran, and last month club members learned about the welding program taught by Chris Carpenter. The next Exploring Club open house is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, at the 3203 Oak Grove Road location, featuring an auto collision overview led by teacher Denni White.
Mike Dineen, Sioux District executive under the Greater St. Louis Area Council, approached Kinsey with the concept to provide younger students, male and female, exposure to the skilled trades. While the TCC offers annual tours for area students at the eighth grade level and sophomore year in high school, the new program goes down to grade six.
"This is of vital importance for our community and our local businesses as we begin to create character-driven programs that will produce quality future employees," Dineen stated. "This program is a unique way for us also to grow local talent, which is something that businesses are consistently searching for as they seek qualified employees in the surrounding area."

Owen receives award for student advocacy
Poplar Bluff High School Principal Mike Owen was named administrator of the year for the Southeast District of the Missouri Association of Student Councils during the organization's 71st annual state convention held Thursday through Saturday, March 7-9, at Lindbergh High School.
"Mr. Owen is the consummate team player. He always looks for a reason to say 'yes' to StuCo," stated PBHS social studies teacher Mitch Davis, Student Council co-adviser. "Mr. Owen's motto is 'this school [belongs to] the kids, and we're here to work for them.' His decisions are student-centered and he gets it, that positive culture affects academic outcomes."
To be nominated for the regional award, an administrator must work collaboratively with Student Council to provide a positive impact on school culture. Davis further noted in his submission that Owen not only supports StuCo, but actively participates in organizing events for the student-led organization.
MASC, a network of middle and high school student councils that provides programs and resources to develop positive student leaders and advisors who promote a quality campus community environment, began honoring administrators from each of its seven districts in 2012, according to a press release.

PBHS English students experience 'Macbeth'
The Shakespeare Festival St. Louis performed the tragedy "Macbeth" for almost 400 Poplar Bluff High School English students on Thursday, March 14, in the Tinnin Center at Three Rivers College.
Directed and adapted by Joanna Battles, the free William Shakespeare play was part of the acting company's 2019 education tour made possible through a Monsanto Fund grant.
Following the condensed hour-long performance, the five-person acting team held a Q&A with the students in attendance. Asked about ad-lib, actor Ted Drury responded: "The only real mistake in theater are the ones you admit to. Theater is a team sport."
The field trip was arranged by communication arts teacher Jennie Randolph, who reached out to tour management after learning that the traveling production is open to underserved rural areas of the state, in addition to the greater St. Louis area. The last time the Shakespeare Festival came to Poplar Bluff was six years ago, according to tour manager Emily Clinger.

Bonus: Famous Missourians Living Museum
Oak Grove Elementary hosted its annual Famous Missourians Living Museum for the public on Thursday, March 14, portraying notable figures with state ties.
The project incorporates reading, writing, social studies and public speaking under the Missouri Learning Standards, according to teacher Kristie Robinson. Presentation boards and oral communication is judged on a rubric, and third grade students receive scores based on memorization of facts, appropriate body language and eye contact.
"This year there were a lot of artists. Athletes and singers are always very popular," Robinson reflected. "We let kids try to pick someone who piques their interest in a subject they want to learn more about."
