Iron Mules wins Connect Award for outreach

The Iron Mules earned the first place Connect Award during the FIRST Southeast Missouri Regional Competition on Saturday, March 6, held virtually at Poplar Bluff High School.

The award is presented to the participating team that establishes fruitful connections within the local science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) community.

The most recent partnership has been forged with the U.S. Army Recruiting Office in Poplar Bluff, which donated $1,000 for "booth space" at a qualifying event, to be used toward new hardware that will replace worn-out, outdated equipment, according to advisors.

"It is safe to say that the biggest part of the program has been built on donations over the years," said Kathy Miller, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics coach. "We started with a single box of parts and the school has provided some funding."

Established in 2013, the program has received numerous contributions from businesses and individuals, along with grants from organizations, allowing PBHS to participate in meets as well as build its own obstacle course to host regional qualifiers for the Missouri FIRST Tech Challenge.

The students are responsible for assembling and wiring the robot from a kit, and then determining the coding necessary to perform various tasks such as tossing or lifting objects, "including an autonomous period in which the robot does the tasks, automatically, once a button has been pushed, without any help from the controlling student," Miller explained.

With some of the club's materials used in previous competitions, arrangements were made last month to deliver the items to the Poplar Bluff Kindergarten Center so students there can also participate in STEM activities. The donation included approximately 40 waffle balls and 30 waffle blocks, 25 large Duplo-style blocks with two building trays for the blocks, 10 rings, four "wobble" goals, and a yoga ball.

The Iron Mules also brought the robot in to teacher Kelen Deffendall's class to demonstrate how the machine has the ability to toss rings via a remote control. Miller's colleague in the science department, Jeanie Kiefer, later shared the reaction from her kindergarten son.

"Mrs. Kiefer's little boy, Becket, came home and immediately requested a robot for his birthday," Miller said. "He asked if he could be in Robotics when he gets into High School."

Mo. House recognizes R-I elementary schools

Reps. Darrell Atchison and Hardy Billington, serving Butler County in the Legislature, issued proclamations to Eugene Field and Lake Road Elementary on behalf of the Missouri House of Representatives on Thursday, Feb. 25, during the school board meeting.

The special recognition was merited since the elementaries were recently named 2020 National ESEA Distinguished Schools, marking the first time in state history that the same school district claimed both awards, Julia Cowell of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has confirmed.

"The [House] members... proudly pause to recognize the important role this state's public schools play in the lives of countless young Missouri citizens," the resolutions read. "Members of the...101st General Assembly join in extending our most hearty congratulations" to Lake Road Principal Rondi Vaughn, Eugene Field Principal Jennifer Taylor, R-I Superintendent Dr. Scott Dill, "and to all the students, faculty and staff... at this proud moment of well-deserved distinction."

Eugene Field is credited in the resolution for being named Southeast Missouri's first Lighthouse School under The Leader In Me initiative in 2016, and maintaining the prestigious status since. Lake Road received praise from the legislators for being named Poplar Bluff's first National Blue Ribbon School-the highest honor an educational institution in America can achieve-in 2018.

This is the fourth consecutive year a school within the R-I district has earned the coveted ESEA award-Elementary and Secondary Education Act-with Lake Road having won previously in 2018, and Oak Grove receiving the honor in 2017 and 2019, respectively.

"What these awards mean to us and our school district is that all kids are learning at high levels... regardless of where they start their academic career or end it, no matter what side of the tracks you live on," Dill said to the school board members.

Superintendent serves as guest reader at ECH

R-I Superintendent Dr. Scott Dill served as special guest reader during Read Across America week at the Early Childhood Center. Dill chose to read one of his childhood favorites, "Tikki Tikki Tembo" by Arlene Mosel, on Thursday, March 4, via Google Meet.

Dill shared with the preschoolers how he used to enjoy reading the children's book to his students back when he served as a library media specialist at the beginning of his tenure, the better half of which has been spent in school administration.
