PBJHS hosts Special Olympic games
The annual Special Olympics Missouri Southeast Area games were held on Friday, April 12, at Fred M. Morrow Stadium, featuring over 200 athletes representing around 15 area schools and agencies.
Participating on behalf of Poplar Bluff R-I were students from the High School, Junior High, Middle School and O'Neal Elementary. The track and field events involved running, jumping and throwing.
Taking part in the opening ceremony was the JROTC presenting the colors, the PBHS octette performing the national anthem and Student Council volunteering to help organize, including overseeing intermission activities at Victory Village.
Leading up to the games, each of the participating buildings held school-wide pep rallies to cheer on the student athletes. The event served as a qualifier for the state competition slated to take place next month in Springfield.

TCC to host job hiring event for students
Poplar Bluff Schools is seeking local employers to participate in the district's inaugural hiring event and conduct preliminary job interviews with graduating seniors.
The event, a collaboration between the Technical Career Center and High School, will run from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, in the PBHS auxiliary gymnasium.
"We want business folks to see the quality of students coming out of our CTE (career technical education) programs," explained Charles Kinsey, TCC director. "We have a lot of really good, hardworking kids who meet all the prerequisites for entry-level positions, and if we can create an easier pathway for them to be hired in their career field, that's the purpose of this."
Students enrolled will be on track to complete courses in auto collision, auto service, building trades, computer graphics and print technology, computer maintenance and repair, cosmetology, culinary arts, health occupations, HVACR and welding through the TCC; as well as in agriculture, business/marketing, and family and consumer sciences through the High School.
Participants will have their resumes on hand, and be prepared to be interviewed for job openings. A special signing event will be hosted at 2 p.m. Friday, May 17, to recognize students who gain employment in their career fields, similar to ceremonies held for college-bound seniors.
Kinsey has been planning the event for some time, and hopes to make it a new annual tradition of the district, he said. "If these kids have 25 percent more knowledge than the average person on the street, that'll save an employer 25 percent of time training," Kinsey continued.
Businesses interested in having representation at the hiring event, may sign up
here.

Bonus: Prom dress/Graduation gown drive
The Child Concern Center of Poplar Bluff donated several prom dresses to the Giving Closet on April 9, at the High School.
The dresses were added to a gently-used, formal attire section of the closet, set up in advance of the PBHS prom later this month. There is also a section designated for graduation gowns so students in need can participate in the commencement ceremony next month.
In addition to the dresses and gowns, which have replaced the winter coat inventory, other items currently being requested include toothpaste and deodorant, reported school librarian Marcia Priest, director of the Giving Closet.
Operating solely off of donations, the
Giving Closet provides clothing, hygiene items, food and school supplies to students who go without. Items that are not of use to school-aged students are passed along to other agencies such as the Child Concern Center, according to Priest.
