New state school board members welcomed

Most recent Missouri State Board of Education member, Mary Schrag of the 8th Congressional District, along with Kimberly Bailey of the greater Kansas City area, toured Poplar Bluff Schools on Wednesday, May 8.

Since Schrag received her appointment by Missouri Gov. Mike Parson in March, she has met with 75 superintendents prior to her Poplar Bluff visit, she reported. She is the owner and chief executive operator of Physical Therapy Specialists Clinic in West Plains. Bailey, who was appointed to the MSBE in August, is a licensed marriage counselor in the northwest portion of the state.

"The purpose of the visit was to allow us to take a deep dive into the current issues facing public education, and share what we as practitioners see on the horizon," R-I Superintendent Dr. Scott Dill explained. "They were engaged and authentic about their work."

Change of Command

Poplar Bluff High School junior Elizabeth Shirrell has been named commander of the Pvt. Billie Kanell JROTC Battalion for the upcoming school year.

JROTC instructor Maj. Gregory Crites promoted Shirrell to succeed Cadet Lt. Col. Skylar Zitnak during the annual Change of Command ceremony held Friday, May 10, in the auxiliary gym.

"The senior Army instructor has reposed special trust and confidence in the patriotism, fidelity and abilities of Elizabeth Shirrell," announced PBHS senior Josh Wicker, battalion operations officer. "In view of this special trust and confidence and demonstrated potential, she is hereby promoted to the rank of cadet lieutenant colonial effective 10 May 2019."

Prior to the passing of the organizational colors, a total of 20 awards were presented to student leaders who have excelled in academics, discipline, physical fitness and public service, including the 2019 Cadet of the Year, freshman Pvt. Jacob Crawford.

Among the event's distinguished guests included R-I Superintendent Dr. Scott Dill, PBHS Principal Mike Owen, Terry Temples on behalf of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Eddy Justice representing the Sons of the American Revolution, Gary Scheel of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, and U.S. Army Recruiting Command Sgt. 1st Class Jack Taylor.

2nd annual PBHS Art Show

Poplar Bluff High School hosted its second annual Art Show on Tuesday, May 7, featuring a gallery of student-made art pieces for sale or on display in the cafeteria, plus slam poetry, live music and hors d'oeuvres for the public to enjoy.

The Art Show was started last year by the Art Department, led by Meg Daniels and Elizabeth Rose, who were both hired at PBHS in 2014 upon earning their art degrees, respectively, from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.

In addition to spearheading the Art Show, Daniels was credited by Principal Mike Owen during the recent Teacher of the Year luncheon for founding a National Art Honor Society chapter and encouraging students to enter regional art contests. For her various efforts helping "propel the art department into the spotlight" in collaboration with colleagues, Daniels was named secondary grade-span TOY in April.

April Athletes of the Month named

The Mules Booster Club has named Zoe Savat and Ben Stewart of Poplar Bluff High School the April Athletes of the Month, presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors.

Stewart, a senior tennis player, set a new record this season with 56 career singles wins. This past weekend, he won the Class 2, District 1 Singles Championship for the second consecutive year, and previously placed first at the Poplar Bluff and Farmington Invitationals. He has signed to play tennis for Greenville University in Illinois. In the classroom, Stewart maintains a 10.6 weighted grade point average.

"Ben has worked hard during and before season to get to this point," noted Charles Harper, his coach.

Savat, a sophomore soccer player, has five goals and one assist so far this season. Her weighted GPA is 11.429, the coaching staff reported.

"She is very respectful on and off the soccer field; she works hard in soccer and in the classroom," stated Rusty Crafton, Savat's coach. "She has been one of our most talented wings these past two years."

Bonus: Meet Blade, our rescue snake

Missouri State Board of Education members were introduced to a rescue snake during a visit to the state-of-the-art science wing of the High School.

Blade, a speckled kingsnake known to eat other snakes - including the venomous kind, was discovered in August 2015 before the demolition of C Building at the former High School location, according to biology teacher Gretchen Pendley.

"He washed in under the doorway during a deluge, and a night custodian found him, thought he was a worm, and got Mrs. (Gail) Karlish to catch him," Pendley recounted. "He was no bigger than a blade of grass, but he needed a tough-guy name, so we called him Blade."
