TCC gearing up to host Car & Motor Show

The Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center will host its inaugural Car & Motor Show this weekend to showcase its updated programming and help raise funds to expand opportunities for students.

The admission-free event is slated to take place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, on the High School campus, featuring food, activities and prizes.

The cost to register a vehicle, motorcycle, four-wheeler or boat is $20 in advance at the TCC at 3203 Oak Grove Road, or $25 at the gate. Free T-shirts will be offered to registrants through Friday.

"It's not just a car show, we're trying to make a community event for outside companies to come in and experience what we do," explained Denni White, auto repair instructor. "Our programs are all revived, and most of our instructors are new over the last six years."

White approached Director Charles Kinsey with the idea for the event last school year, and a faculty committee was formed to make preparations over the summer. The ultimate goal will be to obtain tax-exempt status for an associated nonprofit organization and have the motor show serve as its primary fundraiser each year.

The mission of the 501c3 will be to generate money so students can travel to trade shows in their respective fields, for example. This way career and technical education students can stay on the cutting edge in their industries, and "go from good to great," according to computer graphics instructor Alex Nicolini.

"Our employment rates have gone up in the last couple years," noted welding instructor Chris Carpenter, "but we're also looking to offer more opportunities within our programs so students can see their full potential when they go into these fields."

People's choice awards will be presented in the various categories of the motor show including student-built projects, hot rods, rat rods, exotics, imports, trucks, specialty vehicles, inboard and outboard boats, side-by-sides and motorcycles. Multiple sponsorship levels are available to businesses, including platinum for $500, which secures booth space in the parking lot.

A Can-Am Outlander 450 will be raffled at the end of the show. There will be concessions, a dunking booth, bounce house, cornhole and much more for visitors of all ages. River Radio has agreed to broadcast live throughout the day. For more information, visit the PBTCC Foundation on Facebook or call 573-785-2248.

Southern Bank sponsors dismissal software

Southern Bank has agreed to sponsor Kid Account, allowing the R-I district to expand the dismissal system utilized at the Middle School to include Lake Road Elementary this year.

Through Kid Account, authorized caregivers are issued special cards with barcodes that are scanned by staff while students wait indoors until they see their names pop up on a screen during pickup after school. The web-based system also helps manage building visitors throughout the day, providing background checks, and allows secretarial staff to communicate student attendance updates electronically with faculty.

"We were looking for an opportunity to support the school district and help ensure the safety of the students by making tracking easier for staff," said Mel Jackson, Southern Bank senior vice president/market president.

Kid Account was first implemented at the Poplar Bluff Middle School during the 2017/18 school year when Principal Dr. Brad Owings was seeking a dismissal solution that would get the students out of the elements. Owings, who leads one of the largest upper elementary schools in Missouri, met Kid Account President and CEO Keith Petty at a conference.

In a previous interview with the district, Petty explained that his wife Marsha was an educator and he was in the information technology business. He noticed a "gap in physical accountability for kids" with school officials "dealing with chaos at the end of the day," so he helped develop the human verification system in 2015 as a subsidiary of Midcom Technologies in Farmington.

Horrors & Heroes: PBFD visits PBJHS on 9/11

Junior High world history students, who are not old enough to have lived through 9/11, learned about some of the courageous stories in response to the terrorist attacks, and then the school had a special visit from the Poplar Bluff Fire Department.

"I wanted to find a balance between teaching the students about the tragedy of the terrorist attacks and celebrating the good that came out of it," explained Stephanie Lovette, seventh grade teacher. "I knew that I wanted to end the unit on a positive note, so I came up with the 'horrors and heroes' approach."

On Tuesday, Sept. 10, students watched video clips about the "Boatlift," the largest maritime evacuation conducted in the history of the United States; Welles Crowther aka "the man in the red bandana," a volunteer firefighter who sacrificed his life to save as many as 18 people; and United Airlines Flight 93, the hijacked plane that crashed into a field in Pennsylvania reportedly en route to the U.S. Capitol Building when passengers and crew attempted to regain control.

As part of Lovette's lesson plan, students conducted interviews with parents, neighbors and teachers regarding their accounts of witnessing the live coverage of the attacks. On Wednesday, Sept. 11, Capt. Blaine Murrell and Firefighter Andrew Fox of the PBFD discussed the challenges associated with the job. Some students volunteered to try on gear to experience the weight that the 343 FDNY members who sacrificed their lives felt as they climbed upward of 110 flights of stairs at the World Trade Center.

"I have received so much positive feedback from students about the impact these lessons have had on them," Lovette reflected. "The interviews, firefighter visit and hearing about the heroic efforts of American patriots resonated with these students."

Bonus: Dill with it

Eighth grader Nick Ramsey finally coordinates his wardrobe correctly on Thursday, Sept. 12, when R-I Superintendent Dr. Scott Dill makes a spontaneous building visit to Junior High.
