Red tide plankton turn the ocean a rust color off the coast of Del Mar in California.

Guess who’s back? A red tide is lighting up the Southern California coast, with bioluminescent displays off Oceanside, Orange County, and elsewhere. The nighttime spectacle is from Lingulodinium polyedra, a plankton renowned for its blue glow and the focus of a new study led by Scripps Oceanography scientists. This growth off Del Mar was photographed last week by pilot Quinn Montgomery.
