December 2017
There are lots of things happening this month at Cranbrook Institute of Science. We invite you to the Institute this month, and over holiday break, for STEM Holiday, special hours at exploreLAB and Chocolate: The Exhibition, presented by Flagstar Bank. Later this month, join us on Facebook Live as we give you sneak peeks into exploreLAB, Chocolate and virtual reality!
exploreLAB is open!
Dig your way into exploreLAB with its premiere experience, Dinosaurs and Fossils. Get your hands dirty immersing yourself into the prehistoric world, learning about these impressive creatures, using tools like real paleontologists, and taking home fossils of your own! Located in the former Bat Zone building, exploreLAB is separated into two sections: The Deborah Cooper Dino Dig, a floor level installation designed for children of all ages, and The Paleo Portal, a lab and exploration setting geared toward elementary school age and above.

Tickets to exploreLAB are offered on Saturdays at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm and Sundays at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. Tickets are $5 for all non-members over age 2, $4 for standard members and $1 for all children 2 years and under. Purchase tickets at the front desk at the main entrance. Enhanced members enjoy free admission.
STEM Holiday is back!
Looking for something to keep the family occupied over holiday break? Join us for STEM Holiday as we explore the inner workings of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Visitors can practice their programming and navigating skills using a Sphero, use their knowledge of physics to lay siege to various targets using a medieval catapult, unravel the mysteries of light and color, view the sun safely in our state-of-the-art observatory, and much more! STEM Holiday takes place daily, December 26 – 30 from 1 – 4pm, and is free with general museum admission.
Members only: experience virtual reality at the Institute
Come discover new adventures with Cranbrook Institute of Science, and let us connect you to the virtual world. The Institute is inviting its members to discover virtual reality, CranbrookVR, Dec. 26 – 30. After you have given it a shot, we would love for you to provide us with feedback for future virtual reality experiences.
Only a few more weeks to discover Chocolate: The Exhibition
There is still time to experience Chocolate: The Exhibition, presented by Flagstar Bank. Now until January 7, 2018, travel through time, engage your senses, explore the plant, the products, the history and the culture of chocolate through the lenses of botany and ecology, anthropology and economics, conservation and popular culture.

Exhibit ticket prices: Adults: $8 for non-members; $7 for members; $6 for seniors and children 2-12. Non-members must also pay museum admission.

Chocolate and its national tour were developed by The Field Museum, Chicago and were supported, in part, by the National Science Foundation.
Register now for Young Scientists
Young Scientists continues this month with our Paleontology session. Students will meet dinosaurs, mastodons, and other prehistoric animals by handling fossils from the Institute’s collection. Dream up a cozy habitat for a prehistoric animal, participate in a simulated dig and learn the geologic time scale like a paleontologist.

This four-week session takes place December 5, 12, 19 and 26. Participants must register by December 4. To register, for session times, ticket prices and future sessions visit our website
