Casey Yoshihara, CPA

What is the most inspiring part of your job?
Having the opportunity to meet many new people and learning about their diverse backgrounds.
What is the driving force behind your business?
To provide people with solutions to protect their family and their future
What have you learned from your industry?
There are too many things to list. I would say the most significant thing I've learned is that there is always something new to learn.
Why did you choose your industry?
I chose the life & health insurance industry because the CPA/public accounting industry was not really a path I wanted to stay in long-term. After encouragement from my close family friend, I decided to make the change a couple of years ago. We work together alongside each other (as two separate companies).
What is your style of leadership?
I have a belief that I can learn something from everyone I interact with and work with. I believe that everyone has a unique skill set that can be used to complement one another.
What is your favorite quote?
A good name is to be more desired than great wealth, favor is better than silver and gold. - Prov 22:1

Carey Donaldson with New Beginnings

Everyone’s story is different. New Beginnings is a student loan advocacy company. Started as student loan consulting but changed to advocacy because people need the person in the middle that can help create plans of attack for people when they need help with different ways to pay their loans. The standard repayment programs are very lengthy, have large payments and high-interest rates. Carey will look at the whole picture and guide through the process for loan forgiveness, monthly savings, and/or lower interest. In general, they specialize in loan forgiveness.
New Beginnings was started 5 years ago by Carey. Before starting her company she was a middle school teacher. During these years she noticed that many of her coworkers struggled with the same issue... student loan debt. Carey's idea customers are individuals that are employed and have over 20k in debt.
The largest effect that New Beginnings has seen during the pandemic is the Cares Act. This has allowed people to not have to make their federal student loans. When the Care Act ends, individuals will have to start making their payments again, even if they are unemployed, have decreased income, or have been impacted by Covid in some way.
When people had been furloughed, Carey was able to take specific variables and decrease her clients' monthly payments. During the time that the cares act was implemented, every single client with New beginnings has $0 payments and interest accrual, which has significantly increased their loan forgiveness!
We all learn something new from owning a business. For a while, Carey was avoiding outsourcing, "It can be scary financially for someone to come into something you love so much, wondering if they’ll love it as much as you". In the end, she discovered that outsourcing was a good move for her and her business.
What is inspiring Carey: "I’m helping change lives. Student loan debt is an epidemic – bigger than credit loan debt. Showing people that there is a better way to pay off student loans and to be able to provide them with long-term results that will help them retire, go on a trip or not feel financially strapped is my passion."

A Book recommendation from your Coach:
The Gifts of Imperfection
A motivational and inspiring guide to wholehearted living, rather than just the average self-help book, with this groundbreaking work Brené Brown, Ph.D., bolsters the self-esteem and personal development process through her characteristic heartfelt, honest storytelling. With original research and plenty of encouragement, she explores the psychology of releasing our definitions of an “imperfect” life and embracing living authentically. Brown’s “ten guideposts” are benchmarks for authenticity that can help anyone establish a practice for a life of honest beauty—a perfectly imperfect life.
Now more than ever, we all need to cultivate feelings of self-worth, as well as acceptance and love for ourselves. In a world where insults, criticisms, and fears are spread too generously alongside messages of unrealistic beauty, attainment, and expectation, we look for ways to “dig deep” and find truth and gratitude in our lives. A new way forward means we can’t hold on too tightly to our own self-defeating thoughts or the displaced pain in our world. Instead, we can embrace the imperfection.
