When it comes to owning and operating a business, Steve Florance has it down.

He embodies the ActionCOACH model of business ownership in that he has built his insurance company over 23 years and is now able to work "on" the business instead of "in" the business in day-to-day operations.

What does that look like for Steve? He has five employees at the Spokane Valley office, and two employees at a Sandpoint office.

He said, "My position is to oversee the success and growth of the business."

But he noted that it hasn't always been that way. It has taken many years for him to develop systems to simplify the sales of insurance to residential and commercial clients.

And, the pandemic did affect his business as well. He said that he spent a lot of time setting up IT systems so that employees could work from home. But he did find that the longer the pandemic has gone on, he's had to exercise flexiblity with employees to ensure they can take care of their families and health.

To talk to him, Florance is a model of a calm, organized businessman, which might enhance trust in his insurance firm and its services. The best part for him - he said he can take a month of vacations each year, and honestly, it sounds like he's earned it!

He is inspired by living in a country where "with enough hard work, you can achieve anything you want to achieve."

Simply Northwest

There's a bit of magic walking into Simply Northwest during the holiday season. There are shelves of home decor, Santa figurines, candles, sparkle, glitter and everything that glows.

You can find everything from Spokane branded gifts to clothing and pre-made gift baskets that are sure to impress.

Owner since 2011, Denielle Waltermire-Stuhlmiller ensures that the shop is ready and holds something for everyone.

She said they are known for two main things - a place for women to buy gifts for their girlfriends, and the hub of corporate gift buying in Spokane and Spokane Valley. Although she said, "We have something for everyone."

Waltermire-Stuhlmiller said things haven't always been easy. In fact, when she bought the business, she was expecting a baby and it was the Christmas season. And, COVID hit them hard in the spring with boxes of inventory for Easter, Mother's Day and Administrative Assistants day due to mandates, their doors were closed for eight weeks.

She said she worked hard to maintain morale with her full-time employees and sent them little gifts to keep them going. Now they are fully open, with safety precautions - and be sure to wear your mask.

But be prepared to "feel" the holiday season at Simply Northwest once again!

  • How much money will I need to get it done?

Remember, marketing should be done continually, to different target audiences, and with a different mix of methods.
