From the Economic Development Desk of the
May 20, 2020
You are receiving this email because your organization is at one of the economic development tiers  with the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce. As always, we encourage your comments and questions.
In the time since my last update to all of you, we finished up the MEDC program. For taking the MEDC funds and disbursing on their behalf, I am now required to track the job impact these funds have on our community. Before year-end I must collect and track the jobs saved from those that were fortunate to receive those monies. We know the money was inadequate for the need that exists. If you received these funds, please provide the job info to me when I seek it. Your cooperation is appreciated.

The Economic Development focus is doing all that I can to come up with programs for assistance to help our businesses. There are several items being undertaken:

Financial Measures
1) Working with All in for Alpena to support this fundraising program recently created to support small businesses throughout Alpena in the form of grants. While the priority is to help food and retail oriented businesses, other small businesses will also be considered. Target will administer the funding and provide the grant awards to the recipients once the committee, made up of members of local non-profits, makes the award decisions. Fundraising will continue another two weeks and it is being done through a special project fund established at the Community Foundation of Northeast Michigan. The application window is open and the Chamber website will host a link to the grant application. In the first week the fund was opened the FFNM Legacy Foundation donated $10,000. There have been over 70 donations made so far. Target encourages any person or business in a position to donate to this fund to please do so. The DDA is also considering a match for businesses within the DDA district that are awarded a grant. The DDA Board will consider the match once the grant awards have been determined. Check out the kick-off video and for more program information go to www.allinforalpena.com, or click here for application.

2) The Target board took formal action to allow for smaller pandemic loans utilizing our existing Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) and the Micro Revolving Loan Fund (MRLF).

Programming/Other Measures
1) Target is working with the DDA in collaboration with the City to evaluate various measures to enhance business once the shelter in place order is lifted. We have several items being discussed presently. More to come on this in the next newsletter.
2) Working on gathering information related to procuring PPE for area businesses.
3) Working with the Chamber on gathering and sharing the best practices for re-opening your locations.
4) Reading and distilling the various emails and articles each day that offer government grants and loans for small businesses to determine if they might fit our region and businesses. When we find programs that do, we will add the information and link to our Chamber page which is why you need to check our site routinely.

At our recent Target Board meeting, the Board decided we would indefinitely delay the Annual Target meeting. Typically, this takes place in April. It was pushed back to June 9th. Given the uncertainty about public gatherings, we are simply going to hold off. In lieu of this meeting, we will attach my semi-annual report to the city in a future newsletter to give you a more comprehensive understanding of Target priorities and accomplishments.

In the meantime, wash your hands, stay put and be well!
Mike
